So, since it's been out awhile...Is Alan Wake worth getting?

I love all things horror and psychologically creepy. Some of my favorites are the Silent Hill series and Amnesia, but I also love L4D and Dead Space. I've read reviews and watched Yahtzee, but I'd like to hear opinions from a mass of people who have played Alan wake.

You'll probably like it.
I found it pretty mediocre with the repetitive gameplay, but it was fun.

I liked it and I got really creeped out by the woods, but I would say rent it only simply for the fact that I was able to play part way through a second time when I rented it and it took a lot of the suspense out of the game when I know what is going to happen. I don't think there is a lot of replay value in the game, other than to collect all of the little collectibles and get the achievements. The fights with the shadow people did get a little repetitive at times, but I was able to get past that. I liked exploring the town and the areas you are able to access, and I thought the atmosphere was pretty good, but I don't have a lot to compare it to as I usually don't play a lot of horror games.

I liked the game, but the suspense is kind of ruined the second time. I definitely think you should give it a play through.

The game on normal or hard is insanely easy, I was rolling in ammo, batteries and flares for almost the entire thing.

The story is pretty alright, although it is fairly "wat" throughout the game.

It's not scary. At all. I played in the dead of night, when my parents were out of town, and not one thing scared me.

But yeah, if you can get it for $20 or $30, go for it. Otherwise, don't bother.

It's... well, not horrible.

So if it's cheap and you don't have anything better to get, then sure, go for it. But be warned that it's not really a horror game. Alan Wake is just an action game in the dark.

PS. Nice avatar.

I liked it, even though it wasn't very scary. It's intriguing, and it's a rather unique game.

I'd recommend getting it as it is a good game, but be warned it is a one hit wonder, your second time through will just not be anywhere near as fun as the first time, it has zero replay value.

So, the overall census is that, I would probably like it, but I should wait to get it cheap and it has no replay value. This is the kind of advice I wanted to hear, thanks!

I'll probably end up getting it off of Amazon Warehouse or Ebay. That's where I get my best deals on games.

Oh! Thanks for the avatar compliment! lol

It's worth checking out. If you don't want to shell out whatever the discount is, try to barrow it or go to a blockbuster (good luck with that option).

It's a pretty great rent, but not worth a buy. The story is great, as is the atmosphere of the game, and the characters are well written, but the combat if repetitive, and there isn't much replay value after you've beaten the game once.

For atmosphere and story? Ya.

For combat? No.

If you can get it cheap then by all means, grab it and enjoy it. I wouldn't pay more then 40 dollars for it.

I bought the collectors, and I enjoyed playing both DLC's.
I loved the story, I loved the gameplay, and I loved the setting, as I loved every Remedy game.

Despite it's easiness it was still frustrating. Especially when it spawned enemies behind your back or threw crowds of face-raping birds at you.

Not many game manage to be easy AND frustrating. Hell of an anti-achievement. They prob should have spent as much time on the combat as they did on the lighting engine.

It's nicely atmospheric, but the game has a few fundamental flaws.

1) The combat is kind of meh, which is okay when there's not a whole lot coming at you, but the stand-offs late in the game are kind of boring, even if they're fairly tough.
2) The story is pretty good, but the endless narration really undercuts the drama. It would be much more effective if they cut 75% of the voice over.
3) The endless forest levels gets really old by the end of the game. The two DLCs are nicely surreal and I wish that had been the end of the regular game.
4) Speaking of DLCs, the main game feels a bit incomplete without them.
5) For a non-horror writer, Alan Wake seems rather obsessed with Stephen King... yeah, the endless King quotes about horror fiction never rise above gratuitous and they're so numerous you could probably play a drinking game with them.

But there's something about the game. The story & characters are interesting and the forest scenes are genuinely spooky (even if the game seems determined to telegraph every potential scare). Worth checking out if you catch it cheap. Good number of people really enjoy it, but it's sort of like Heavy Rain in that it's hovering around something which could be really good and effective, without quite getting it right.

While I've heard that the game is decent; if you want a real horror game and you have a PC; pick up Amnesia: The Dark Descent.

So, I think I'm going to get it. I see it for $15 on Amazon Warehouse. I suppose I'll have to pick up the DLC at some point as well. I mean, even if I ended up really not liking it, I can't get too angry for just $15.
