So the new Tundercats, what do you think?

So as a fair few of you know, a while back there was a bit of a fanboy rage over the designs of the new Thundercats (there always is ragin' with nostalgic stuff). Some people were pretty pissed that their favorite characters were anime-fied, and that the new series was going to be anime and not western animation, other people were not fussed about it at all, and I was one of the latter.

I was somewhat intrigued when it started playing on TV though, so I watched the first few episodes online (not living in the US, I couldn't see them anywhere else) and was somewhat impressed. As far as I can tell, the characters are interesting enough, though not fleshed out enough (with the possible exception of Panthro) and the world is really interesting as a setting. I've found myself involved and wanting to know more about the world, in the same way I was with Avater: TLA's world and characters a few years back. I feel that time will only tell how much more the world, characters and story will be fleshed out.

TL;DR: So Escapists, what do you think of the new Thundercats? Like it? Hate it? Lets haer your opinions on the subject at hand.

Please note, I'm not a kid of the eighties. I did not grow up with Thundercats, despite knowing a fair bit about it, as by older brother was a Thundercats fan.

I wonder if there is a word for people who hate anime-styled artwork? Because that's what I'm seeing here. Xenophobia in animation style. Don't be believe me. Try typing "Anime is" in google and look how many recent searches view it in such a negative way.

What's a 'Tundercat'?
Also: NAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRFFF!!!!

I never really liked the old ones... never knew they were making new ones though. I suppose I will have to check that out before I make any off hand judgements on it tho.

Not a kid of the 80's either(born in '94) but I have seen a few episodes of the original Thundercats. I was still young so I didn't understand what was going on. The new Thundercats however looks anime-fied so I guess it's trying to appeal to people who watch mainly anime like me.

So in short, it looks good, but I have watched only half of one episode. I will watch it all however.

I was quite excited about it, but after reading this, i returned to a cold observant state.
I will still check it out though.

While granted, I haven't seen the old series in years, from what I remember I think the characterization is much improved over the original series, especially with regards to the villains who are actually being treated as credible threats instead of well...jokes. That said, I think the pacing is positively atrocious. Character flaw is introduced? Resolved at the end of the same episode. I found this particularly egregious with Panthro's opinion of Liono. Beginning of the episode he was understandibly annoyed at Liono's inexperience, lack of forethought and the fact that he hadn't proven himself capable of the role. All legitimate complaints. At the end of the episode: He was happily swearing his loyalty to the kid. Come on, that's too short a character arc.

It's pretty cool. I really liked the first episode, haven't been able to watch since then, but it looked good. Also, I"m a 90's toonami fan and loved the first one. Don't think the second was as good, but it was certainly a fitting tribute.

For three words alone I am prepared to love it:

Snarf. Doesn't. Talk.

HUGE improvement. Otherwise, the pacing is a bit off, and it comes off as rather juvenile. Perhaps I've just come to expect more from cartoons these days, but it definitely feels like it's made for kids.

I was born in 86 and didn't watch the original Thundercats as a kid. Watching them when I was older was impossible because I was too annoyed by Snarf. This poke-version is much, MUCH better.

It's pretty good in my opinion. Anybody else see the episode, "Song of the Petlars"? It's a really heartwarming take on mortality for a kid's show.

I did watch the originals.

I like the new one. I mean come on -- Terry McGinnis as Lion-O. And the original Lion-O as Lion-O's dad (not that he lasts long). It's good stuff.

I got only one problem.

Yeah, the pacing of the episodes is just terrible so far. I do honestly hope that they sort it out and start moving at their own pace, like Avatar: TLA did. Hell the finale of TLA was four fucking episodes long, that's about 1 1/2 hours. It was literally a movie, just for the final showdown. And it was fucking awesome.

In terms of Panthro tho, I was more talking about the development they give him via the flashbacks, fleshing out his backstory, more than the story arc of that episode.

Watched the first two, seemed alright, nice to get some more fleshed-out backstory. Though while I do think it looks good, I do have a beef with the pseudo-anime art style in that you see it EVERYWHERE in Western action cartoons since Avatar:TLA hit it big. Sure, it's better than trying to replicate their '80s look, but it also would have been nice to see more of an attempt at an original look rather than using the same re-treaded style as Avatar, Teen Titans, the TMNT remake, and so many other shows.

I like it. I DVR and watch it ever week. Wish it was an hour long every week instead of half but hey.

I blame France. The Amazing Spiez, Totally Spiez, and all those shitty shows are what started the Fauxnime style. It is an excuse to use cheap as hell animation, and to appeal to the Pokemon crowd of youngsters.

i really don't mind the character designs (i actually like them) and i like the premise.

its just that sometimes the show does things that are just TOO childishly stupid for me to be able to ignore.

which kinda takes me out of the experience.

on the whole though, i'm still watching.

I think you meant mortality, not morality.

As for the show, it might have a few issues here and there, but cut it some slack. The show has just started and hasn't really had a chance to hit its groove yet. Besides, even the greatest shows out there hit a few speed bumps in their early years/episodes
