A family of cats moved into the bushes in front of my house a few days ago. There's a mother cat and four kittens, a few months old. My parents were feeding them and occasionally petting them, and my mom wanted to take one of them. So, a few minutes ago, she did. She's petting it in the living room right now.

Now, winter is coming and Chicago tends to get cold in the winter. What do you think we should do, since I think that the mother cat is going to miss her baby. Also, if you want, what should we name the cat if we keep it? It's a girl.

You should give the cat a good home. Instead of the harsh winter streets. Lessee what to name it... what about something like...Eve. Or Holly

Take them in, get them checked up at the vets and give them all a good home. Doesn't sound like you can't afford it, so that's something I'd do. But if you can't take them all in, I'd try finding them all a good home, mother cat included.

It might take a lot of time though, as they are feral, but eventually they should warm up to the idea of being inside cats. I'd ask a vet what to do if you are considering declawing them as they might run at some point or another, or might be too much to handle.

EDIT: Forgot to throw in a name, I'd name it Gypsy... would be so much easier if we had a picture.

Take it to the pound maybe, hope someone adopts them before they get put down. It'd give them a better chance for survival than a Chicago winter anyway.

Ten Cents! Name the cat Ten Cents! I would anyway.

Call the local animal control, And then they others can have a good chance of re-homing. This close to christmas people are going to want kittens.

Don't give it that stupid "Mittens" crap. Name it something you can be proud of, like "Helena, Destroyer of Worlds."
Also, if you want, you can make a shelter for the cats.

I'd keep the family. The two alternatives are taking the kitten away from his mommy and leaving them all on the cold streets. But talk to a vet first. They're definately not domesticated, and you'll probably need to take special dietary and environmental precautions.

Good on you for a good deed, although you should probably take the others to the spca (or equivilent where you are).
As for names, I can't help you too much there, I have very little imagination.

Sorry about that, I just love them.
What color is it? That could help with the name.

If Caleco, then name it Cyrodiil
If Black and White, name it Revan
If White only, name it Snowball
If black only, name it Sithis
if it is tabby, name it M'aiq

Name the kitten un-vapid.
Because kittens are typically not vapid.

Vapid.
Such a fun word! :3

If it's a feral cat, you've just adopted a mummy cat and the other kittens too. Mummy will come looking for baby and she won't be leaving without it (seriously, never try to seperate animals from their kids early).

It being a cat I doubt that really equates to any serious risk (except for your carpets), but she will be coming looking for the missing kitten. Also take it to the vets, feral cats always seem to have worms, even the babies, plus it'll need vaccinations.

Take them all in, or take them to a shelter where they can get adopted.

Name the cat Butterscotch Princess Prissypants.
Yes, I made that up just now
