My reaction was mix of confusion and disbielief, that it got actually aired non-ironically (as a parody/comedy). Not planning to watch this particular series, after the 'first encounter'. However that's outsider's perspective. Any thoughts?

Any more information?

Like, I haven't seen it, but if what's causing you problems is a matter of cultural perspective I can probably offer some thoughts. If it's just that it's not interesting or compelling, less so. It'd be interesting to know so I can decide whether to watch it, actually.

From what I've seen, the decision to exoticize pre-Roman Britain is an interesting one, but not remotely inappropriate. Britain was right on the edge of the Roman world. Romans (the only surviving sources we have) wrote about it like it was this distant, exotic place where the laws of nature worked differently and people were a bunch of weird, superstitious savages.

You couldn't possibly write a "historically accurate" depiction of these events, you could write a "historically plausible" one but it would probably be quite boring. Honestly, this period is so far in the past and so tainted by the biases of Roman authors that it's basically a fantasy setting.

Nah, if you haven't seen it just watch it. I ask for personal reaction/impression only. No need to write any justification for that, if only to not go into partisan quarrels over said opinions and ones tastes.

Nah I'm pretty unimpressed by it as a whole. But in a cruel twist of fate, HBO didn't actually produce this one, it was a Sky Original, with some help from Amazon from what I can read. So we can't even blame this one on the United States, it's on us!

I can see it appealing to a certain demographic. There are some themes that people of a more Britain First, nationalistic view might strongly identify with, such as the concept of the 'foreign invaders' flooding the nation and pissing all over the 'British way of life'. But for those of us that are far less Nationalistic, I feel like all that's left is an inaccurate (did you see that fucking castle?) Vikings wannabe with bargain bin costumes. That's not to say that shows like Vikings or The Last Kingdom were accurate, but at least they were entertaining. It got a 3/10 from me, though I'm from the Midlands so it could just be because I'm such a savage still.

I thought it looked pretty good from the trailer, but several people I've spoken to have said it's rubbish.

Still going to give it a whirl.

Interesting. I didn't realise that.

Thank you all for replies. Although it seems, not many people have actually already watched it.

Speaking as someone who looks approximately Celtic and therefore definitely am, these are offensive stereotypes and I find it appalling that Anglos like Zoe Wanamaker are anglowashing our roles in television.

The Roman EMPIRE's invasion of our humble land destroyed our culture and if it hadn't happened the Celtic Britains would be in space by now.
