After playing oblivion I realized how much it sucked haveing no one following you, Then I got the Nine Divines Played through and had my personal bodyguard follow me about everywhere. This was fun, However at the time the AI sucked. After playing the Fallout games it appears Bethsda has made having companions better. So With the reacent comeing of Skyrim what would be your ideal companion.

Personally for me I want another person like this:

My own pet/friend dragon. Doesn't have to be a big one maybe just be young one that can't fly properly or something which is the reason why it follows you.

Also a Daedra could be pretty awesome. One that could talk about it's life in Oblivion and why it's not evil anymore or because your character is more evil. Either an Atronach, one of the darth maul people or heck, I'd love to have one of the giant crocs following me.

A Khajiit I rescue from slavers who constantly follows me around with a crossbow making grunts in his own language translated by subtitles. Also we own a kickass ship and meet some imperial trying to save a princess who is dragging along some old wiz- ... wait, I think I've heard this somewhere before.

Anyway something to counterbalance me, as a spell using swords man in heavy armor I could use a thief in the shadows with a bow who could go in first and help clear out enemies.

Honestly, no-one. They get in the way of my sword swings and then have the audacity to say I'm the one in the wrong, they give me away when I'm sneaking, they prevent me from getting a clear shot when using ranged attacks, and they make me constantly check up on them in case they die, since I'm always paranoid if I don't check every 10 seconds they'll drop dead.

I do agree they made companions much better in Fallout, particularly well-done in New Vegas, but the main reason I don't like them is balance. You either get balanced around using companions or balanced around not using them. With the former, it's very hard for those like moi to play solo, the drop in difficulty when getting a companion in FO:NV was absurd. With the latter, if you get companions, you become overpowered and the game isn't fun any more.

A way to implement it would to make you more powerful when on your own than with companions, but then it would be illogical to get companions as you as the player have a smaller impact on combat. So the only way I see a companion system working in Skyrim is to have a little slave-child who follows you, is immune to damage and is invisible & silent to enemies, and all he/she can do is carry loots for you. And by slave-child I mean something like the Argent Grunt in WoW or the Arena Fan in Oblivionm

On the one hand, I liked the banter from the NPCs in Baldur's Gate and Dragon Age: Origins. On the other hand, I think walking through the wilderness alone is a big part of the charm that TES has for me.

For it to work for me, I think I would need multiple companions so they can talk to each other. Just having a silent person walking after me doesn't really appeal to me in this game, but I haven't played the Fallout games, so who knows. If they do talk, that might be even worse, since my character wouldn't talk back (or he would, taking away control from me).

If we do get a companion, I want good AI and communication skills. They have to be able to tell me what they want me to do, and I should be able to tell them what I want them to do (i.e. attack guy 1, run away, help me, etc.). I prefer someone who can easily handle the tedious little critters while I handle the interesting stuff.

I think they SHOULD balance it around companions. If you wanna solo somthing, you should REALLY solo it. Worst-case-scenerio, you can just turn-down the diffaculty.

Edit: Also, soloing grants you better stealth capabilities. So, it kinda balances itself out.

OT: A dremora, like this guy. @5:20

As long as they have deep storylines like the companions in New Vegas and not those 2D companions in F3 I'll be happy.

Then again in a game where melee is the primary combat having companions rush in wouldn't end well if Oblivion is anything to go by.

I personally cant stand the companions, cant rez em and keep em dont want em. Having someone around that can be overwhelmed who you cant communicate with and when they die they die, in the end for me it just ends with me babysitting the ai.

My dream companion would be one that I wont need to babysit and one that I can rez or something after battle if they fall.

The ones in Fallout would be only KOED right?, As long as they don't get in my way, As had been stated they should be fun.

Odly enough I liked ED-E the most, Beacuse he couldn't talk but his sounds of movements... Pissed me off.

I want Dogmeat! I'd be happy with just Dogmeat. Keep your dragons and knights, with Dogmeat by my side, I'll deal with both post-apocalyptic futures AND fantasy horrors.

It's a game about dragons. So a massive dragon would be nice.

If you mean npc companion as opposed to mount? None, Bethesdas companions in games are usually more of a hinderance. I'm better on my own.

From what I've seen, I'd rather explore the fantastic wilderness alone because I feel it would ad to the atmosphere, but if it came to it, a sneaking, conniving yet intelligent goblin.

I'd never take an actual companion since my Skyrim character's going to be stealth based and having some other idiot around isn't going to help that. Having some dog/trained wolf/pet Daedra that could carry loot might be interesting, though I doubt that any form of intuitive control scheme for it (even an attack/follow button) could be crammed into the console controler.

Oh well, maybe in mods.

My old Morrowind Character.

... What? There is nothing like an Argonian Samurai in a golden robe with a rice-hat, a badass dai-katana on his back and the skill to jump all the way from Vivec to the top of the gray mountain.

Liberty Prime would make a great companion if only so I can listen to "Embrace Democracy or you WILL be eradicated!"
