So you just overwrote your only save game when you tried to load it

It's an old piece of gaming wisdom: Use at least 3 different saving slots!

I've had to learn this a couple of times the hard way. Once, when playing Tomb Raider 2, I fell down a cliff into an abyss, and while in the air, I saved the game, overwriting the only slot I had, when I actually tried to load it...

Another time, in Splinter Cell Pandora Tomorrow, in the last mission, I overwrote the save slot with under 10 seconds on the clock. For those who haven't played it: the last mission is a race against the time. You have to get to different places to defuse bombs (as I remember). I was wasting too much time and wanted to reload the last save. I actually DID make it, after around 100 tries. This, or replaying the whole game.

Did you have facepalming moments like that? If so, how did you cope with them?

I did this when I was younger on my save file of Pokemon Red. Started a new file just for fun, and out of habit I saved the game before I turned of the power. I was gutted.

Done this a couple of times, on a few games which I can't remember now.

I have accidentally quickloaded a hour old save a couple of times... that was not cool.

This has happened from time to time, but I think I've learned to be more relaxed about it. Most everything has auto-saves at each chapter/mission, so much as you've lost SOME time its not ALL of it. Even then, if its a game I actually like (as compared to one thats just killing time) starting over isn't such a big deal anyway. You are better at everything and don't get yourself stuck so I find it more fun the second time round.

I generally just feel a bit depressed, leave the game alone for a while and play something different.

Always sucks when it happens :/ or worse a savegame gets corrupt, that's happened a few times too.

Megaman Battle Network 4. I had put hours upon hours into it, but decided to screw around with a new game. I saved out of habit. I've never been that angry before or since then.

I've had Draagon Age corrupt on me when im very far through it, it caused me massive amounts of frustration. If that tends to happen though i'll just put the game down for a while.

Except PSO on the gamecube. That game corrupted the save file about 10+ times on me, each time i lost a character that was over level 60. Each time i'd just start again. Luckily i had a mate who kept giving me super sweet items to help me on my way.

Oh dear god, this is a gamers worse nightmare. Luckily I mainly play on consoles, so I don't have to worry about this to often. It's much more common for the game to freeze when the game lacked an auto-save function. This has put me back 2-3 hours several times...

If I were the Incredible Hulk, every time this happened to me, another city would probably be wiped off the map.

Normally swear like a drunk and angry sailor and turn it off for a while. Then I just go ahead and carry on when I feel like it later.

I'm very cautious and almost obsessive-compulsive when it comes to saving, so I've never had too many problems.
The thought of losing hours of gameplay though, terrifies me.

I tend not to do that,
There was this one time though when I did the opposite, I was playing KotOR for the forst time and had nearly finished Taris, I hadn't saved in a bit and was in a rush to do so, I then saw it "Loading..." D: I had loaded my only save file from about two hour earlier, I was pissed.

I have a weird out of body experience and try to remember the last time I saved. Usually I was tired and just forgot to move down a save slot. :(

Twice. First time was in Ratchet & Clank 3. Challenge mode complete, all guns maxed out, everything collected. Started a new file and I accidentally saved over my other one. Second time was in Disgaea DS. I forget how long I played it or how far I was in it, but I overwrote my save file, while starting a new game in Etna Mode. I don't need to say how pissed off I was.

I haven't ever really had any moments like the ones you listed above (with the exception of a few Pokemon Gold incidents), but I do remember having a lot of trouble with corrupted game saves on my Nintendo GameCube.

It seemed like there was always a point where I would hit a certain number of saves and then the next time I went to play a game and tried loading the save file, it would say that the saved game was corrupted and I would have to start all over again.

In fact, this was the reason why I gave up on Nintendo and switched to Sony.

Pokémon Yellow, let my gameboy lie around when a younger relative was around. It was so many years ago yet the scars have not healed. 148 Pokémon! I HAD ALMOST CATCHED THEM ALL!

I saved over my bros saves a few times, and he did the same to me. But I remember the most resent one was, when I saved over new game plus play through on resident evil 5, with one of the different single player mission types. Needless to say I was pissed.

I lost count of the number of times I played the early missions of Fallout 2, "thanks" to save glitches.
Definitely learned the hard way that multiple save files are the way forward.
