Damn it, I remember when Hipsters stood for something. It wasn't just about counter-culture for the sake of counter-culture, it was standing for the idea that there was more than the expectations that people heaped upon you, about doing what you wanted to do, not what was chique. Writing that word makes me feel dirty.

I don't use social networks because I feel they're too impersonal. Whatever everyone else feels is irrelevant.

I'm on both. I use them for different reasons.

My Facebook profile is private and only contains people I have met in real life; along with a few groups I'm interested in - like my local pub's group. (Can I get a Hell yeah for local Colorado brewers? Hell yeah!)

Ahem. Anyway, Facebook, to me, is used in a personal and small-ish way. I never friended people or groups just to gain followers there. I use it like a casual, intimate - albeit online - way to share things with family and friends back home in Arizona and California.

Google+ is quite different. I use it very differently; because of the "circles" feature I felt free to add many, many people to the network - I'm in quite a few "Gaming" circles - and I use my real name there as well as on FB. It's a community of mostly mature people, using real names, yes yes I know it's so dangerous to do that - whatever; I can't find out more by a person's IP address which is logged every time you visit a site unless you're using Tor or a proxy server - anyway, it's a community that allowed me to have conversations with people I've never met.

You can circle people based on interests, like I have a "Gaming" one and a "US News and Politics" one - people in my politics circle might not care about my 4th edition D&D game or the latest article I link to on The Escapist; people in my Gaming circle might not really care about my opinions on the US Political system (doooomed!) - anyway. Ahem, again.

The user interface is much cleaner looking in Google+, which I like; same reason I use gmail and google's search engine - I like the minimal clutter look of everything Google puts out and they did this social network well.

I'll probably keep both FB and G+ for different reasons.
