Hey everyone,

For my final year of school studies I'm tasked with investigating the social impact of video game violence. To help with my research, I've formed a survey to test on some gamers. The survey is quick to complete with only ten questions. Completing the survey would greatly assist me with my research, and you can find the survey and more details here:

http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/VXXVVVF

The research is obviously non-profit and for educational purposes only, so if this is considered spam, I greatly apologise and I will remove the thread ASAP.

Thank you in advance, I really appreciate the help!

I will tell you the same thing I tell any of these threads when the poster has a low post count...

If you quote me, I will fill out your survey for you.

"But Tippy2k2, you sexy sexy beast, why in the world do you have such a weird request?"

Simple: A lot of these surveys pop up on the site and the person never ever comes back. If you prove to me that you are an actual member of this community rather than just some student who wants us to do his survey and then ignore us, I will happily help you out.

EDIT: Quote requirement completed. I am taking your survey now :)

I took your thingy, I hope stuff works out. I'm glad that people are taking an interest in what is actually going on, but I think it's worth mentioning how many of these survey things are popping up lately. Hopefully you aren't the government taking tabs on us!

I took the survey. Interesting questions, though I think some of them might be a little too primed for research purposes. Specifically those that ask directly about what may just be your conclusion. It may be more effective to have respondents talk about two different situations involving violence, one in real life and one in games, and look at differences in tone or language from the responses (or something like that). More open-ended questions may provide you with more insight into how reasoning differs between a gaming situation and a real life one.

Anyway, I wish you luck on your research!

If you are going to continue posting on The Escapist then I'll do your survey.

Sorry everyone, I should have seen how something like this could be an issue and it's selfish of me asking something like this so early in my 'profile' life. It probably doesn't mean much, but I'm a bit of a lurker on The Escapist, and after Gametrailers became a mess I moved over here in search of a new gaming community. But yeah, I certainly won't bail on this forum, if I had known you guys had to deal with surveys so often I wouldn't have posted one - sorry again!

Thanks for replying everyone btw.

Really insightful. I'm going to look in to new ways I can form questions to represent something like this, thank you!

Filled in the survey.

In any case, welcome to the Escapist community. Hope to see you become a regular.

Like some of our fellows already pointed out, your survey does seem to make assumptions. For a simple example of what I mean: the 6th survey question seems to assume the respondent is still studying, even though many of us are working stiffs and/or have families, and as such have different priorities.

A good survey, especially one with only 10 questions, is actually quite hard to create. I would advise you to give it some further thought, tweaking your questions to have a more neutral phrasing, making sure to avoid anything that may cause respondents to gravitate towards certain answers. Maybe add some more questions, preferably open ones.

You start off by asking the wrong question right away. You instantly make the assumption that there is a connection between video games and violence which is a bad start for any survey.

A more appropriate research subject is analyzing the varying emotions that various genres of video games bring out of people and the types of people and how they methodically approach when playing said game.

By taking that then you can research the types of emotions that have a direct connection towards aggression and what kinds of aggression would most likely lead towards the physical act of violence.

Sorry but what most people want to do in earnest to see if there really is a problem with "video game violence" is 99% of the time flawed from the start. It would be the same logical fallacy if a person was doing a paper on "reading violence" or "watching movies violence".

And I haven't even approached the other big flaw with such subjects is the factor of reality versus fantasy to which is one reason you have these flawed discussions because everyone who is now offended by video games over subjects of sexism and violence aren't capable of acknowledging that the video game is a piece of fantasy and fiction compared towards how a person is affected by reality and the more important everyday social factors by interacting with other people in reality.
Ever think he/she could be trying to disprove the connection between games and violence? What your suggesting may be a bit open for a college project.
I think you shouldn't be so offended that video games and violence are brought up in one survey...

OT: Not a bad survey, filled one out in college the other day for a fellow final year student, one quite like this infact, also based on video games and violence, You're not my friend Rob are you?

Filled out your survey, but just wanted to let you know some of the options felt a bit restrictive. What bothered me in particular was the inclusion of an 'other' option but not being allowed to choose it as an answer without arbitrarily selecting something else first.

Haha, I'm not Rob I'm afraid. But thanks for filling out the survey.

FWIW - this isn't a college project, it's a high school one. I definitely want to provide an unbiased and accurate piece, but I don't think the standard is quite that high for school. This is more of a 'stepping stones' project. Thanks for the insight though!

That's really disappointing, I had no idea it didn't allow the 'other' option to be selected as an answer. The whole reason I put it there was for that intent.

Damn, that's really a shame. Thanks for completing the survey anyway.
