I am an Anthropology student at UIC and I was asked an interesting question by one of my friends today and I figured I would ask it here.

The question is if a guy is in college (say 19-20)what do you think would be the youngest socially acceptable age a girl could be for the relationship to be acceptable and why?

No younger then 18. Any younger then that would seem a bit...odd. I remember the time my cousin (16) was dating a guy who was 21. That was one hell of an awkward thanksgiving.

17.

If it gets any younger...its like you're stalking out high school freshman or something and is just plain weird. I don't really know why to be honest. Maybe its because they haven't matured to the same level that you're at yet, or the fact that they could be easily manipulated.

Id say 17.

To me a 19-20 guy dating a girl younger than 17 is bordering the creepy.

Atleast 18 years old, and I prefer to keep it within two years apart (I'm 21, so I would like to date somebody between the ages of 19 and 23.)

EDIT: Oh, and they have had graduated high school for me to view it as acceptable. Don't get me wrong, I won't date anybody unless they are in university.

Dude, Rule of Seven:

(Guy's Age/2)+7=Minimum girl's age

So, 19 year old dude can go for a 16 year old girl.

I'm going to go ahead and say 3 years below, max. That means they likely met when they were both in High School.

There's a law out here that >4 years age difference is statutory. So 15-16 is acceptable by law.

However, I think the girl has to be at least 17 to make it acceptable. Anything younger than that and it's just weird.

Socially acceptable is probably as low as 17, 16 for 19 year olds. I dated a 20 year old when I was 17 and no one seemed to take much issue about it. Well my mom gave me an extremely ironic and offensive "all men are out to get you" speech when we had our first date.

I'd say 18 as well, but even that's pushing it. I'm 22 now and would prefer 21-24. Once bars and pubs become a viable place to spend time, it feels weird having to dance around the issue with an (alcohol) minor. However, I was 20 and dated an 18 for a bit, but that's kind of an exception for me. I sometimes feel weird if the girl is even a year behind me, don't know why. Actually, I think it was school and the artificial divisions it puts up between one year and another. Now that I've graduated college, I probably won't mind a few years difference, because I won't have the old Freshman/Sophomore/Junior/Senior divide messing with my head.

I agree with this, it's pretty much spot on most times.

The rule I generally follow is the age of the older person /2 (Rounded down) + 7 as the minimum age for the younger person.

Why do so many people still cling to double standards in age differences?

That's ridiculous. I love that I take classes with people who are all over the place in terms of degree progression and age. It really gives me confidence in my ability to complete a degree working with people who are taking the courses for post grad. I also had a massive crush on this one guy I had two classes with who was taking courses for post grad.

They say you shouldn't have sex with someone unless their age is equal to half your age plus 7. So for a 20 year old, he shouldn't be having an intimate relationship with anyone under 17. Under Canadian consent law, I think someone from 14-18 can legally have sex with anyone within 4 years of their age. With a wider age gap, it's considered statutory rape on the part of the older person.
