Hello to everyone. Let me just start by saying I don't watch a whole lot of anime, so it is fairly hard to try and stay focussed on shows like Bleach when i just start watching them and they have 230+ episodes.

Now to the main point. I am looking for a good anime to watch, and I mean like defining the genre good. One that will actually keep me entertained and will make me want to watch it for a long time. I have seen a few anime, I watched Elfen Lied (really good) Dragon Ball Z, Bleach and Naruto, one time I did try to watch Cowboy bebop but I had to go somewhere and I never got around to watching it again. The one I particularly liked out of that list was Elfen Lied, primarily because it wasn't (and I know you're all sick of the stereotype) Ninjas and Samurai's running around with messed up hair with weapons that look like they could skin a crocodile. Elfen Lied had a depressing ending and few episodes, I think that is why i enjoyed it so much.

So Escapist what are some other good anime shows. I'm looking for a preferably short (although I won't care to much if it isn't ) good anime with some gorish scenes and preferably a depressingly theme about it. Also if this may effect your judgement I like it when there are big monsters in movies, machines and space.

The Anime doesn't have to follow those guide lines, they're just what I prefer, if you can't think of anything similar to that then just tell me your favorite anime, why it is and if I might like it.

*obligatory you must watch Death Note comment here*

While I wouldn't call it genre defining, I found Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei to be really hilarious. It's just something to watch when you're down and want to laugh at something silly.

I would recomend you finish off Cowboy Bebop, but thats up to you (It does have a really great ending)and the series is only 26 episodes.
You might like to try watching the first season of "Ghost in the shell Stand Alone Complex" its about 20 episodes(Includes robots and augmented cyborg humans).
Also "Big O" might be a good try, it has giant mechs and a kinda depressing atmosphere (and a butler with an eyepatch!) not sure how long it was though.

Good luck picking an anime to enjoy!

Is there like actual murder and mayhem in it? or is it that there is the feeling that a murder may happen at any time and be really my messed up, but doesn't happen for a long time if at all?

Yes. I forgot to add that in the review. My bad. The story and the characters are amazing.

I have a link to where you can watch it if anyone wants.

EDIT: Review updated with point. Thanks!

Cromartie High school is one of the funniest things I have ever seen. It's ridiculous and charming at the same time. Also the English dub is pretty good if you prefer not to read everything.

here's one of the funnest moments in the show

I've been watching Fullmetal Alchemist. Its available on Netflix instant view and has about 50 episodes (so not super long). I don't know about genre defining but its famous enough.

Definitely Bacanno.
The best anime I've seen since Cowboy Bebop; it has a brilliant cast of characters, and interweaves about 5 or 6 stories really well, all in the course of just 1 season.

Plus the intro song is amazing

For excellent animé which doesn't hold back on the violence or potentially depressing themes, I'd recommend:

Baccano!, 13 episodes (+ 3 OVAs) of elaborately woven action, horror, comedy, gangster drama, and plot threads, all coming together beautifully.

Higurashi no Naku Koro ni, psychological horror mystery mindfuck extraordinaire. Depressing theme and gory could potentially fit this one extremely well. First season is 26 episodes, the second 24.

Monster: Despite being 74 episodes long, this noir thriller masterpiece would otherwise fit the bill.

Berserk: A quality work with plenty ultraviolence and with some heavy handed themes, it's perhaps a bit too close to the "messed up hair samurai with surfboard sized sword". And the current 24 episode Animé ending is quite absurd (second season on the way though).

After all that, relax with some Excel Saga and it's insane tempo comedic spoofs of various animé genres.
