Story:

what we knew already: year is 2032, character Morgan Yu
Morgan can either be male or female
He/she is big part of private research project that works on advancing the human race
Your home is Talos I, a research station that belongs to the company TransStar
Talos I will be overrun by mysterious aliens
your goals: save the station and get behind the secrets of Talos I, TransStar and yourself

Aliens:

most common enemies were called "Mimics"
they can change into any objects: bin, coffee pot, weapon.. you have to pay attention to your surroundings
three more aliens were visible: a humanoid melee fighter, a flying enemy and a monstrous and aggressive "alien bigfoot"

Gadgets:

gloo gun, recycle charger and neuromod were shown
Zero G Propulsion System was briefly mentioned, no info on that though
gloo gun shoots black stuff that allows you to glue enemies to the walls or kill them
gloo gun's "ammunition" can also be used to build stairs or to close leaking pipes whose fountains of fire block your way
recycle charger is a handy gadget that can be thrown and will "clean up" the area around it, it's also able to disassemble things into parts (organic or metallic components, etc.)
recycle charger will be used to craft things with the help of blueprints
neuromod is kinda like an augment and allows you to take on human and alien abilities, example: kinetic blast (shockwave)
mimic ability seems the most fun: you can change yourself into any object.. even a coffee pot to hide from enemies or a metal ball to roll through a small opening
mimic even allows you to use other abilities as well: you can turn into a coffee pot and shoot yourself up a small shaft with kinetic blast

Gameplay:

simulation, story, open world, missions
every playthrough is supposed to be new and different
you can either go aggressive or calm, much like in Dishonored.. Prey gives you a choice about your approach
no big shootouts as there aren't a lot of guns on the space station
you'll be able to explore the space station and the outer areas aka. space in general
weapons alone won't do it, you need to be creative and also solve "puzzles"

I'm sorry... I just thought it was kind of funny.

Forgive me, 'particular' Escapist users. I couldn't help myself.

Why, of course it is, B-Cell. It's got guns and the developer is saying a bunch of vaguely cool sounding stuff about it.

On a serious note, that is the worst looking pistol I have ever seen. And the worst designed. Seriously, look at that god damn thing, it's garbage.

I must admit, the concept of enemies that can disguise themselves as common random objects does sound good on paper. The questions remains if the execution will also be good, because a lot will depends on the aliens being able to believably mimic a wide variety of objects.

If they can only change into a smallish number, or if they have some kind of obvious tell that lets you distinguish them from harmless things, then sooner or later you'll be on your guard every time you come across any object you know can be dangerous, completely eliminating the possible tension of "Crap, on low health. Will picking up that ammo pack in the corner literally bite me in the ass?"

There's also the possibility that the mimicry will only appear a limited number of times as scripted events. In which case: interesting idea wasted.

Looks like someone took a Glock pistol design and then changed it to be more sci-fi, but inadvertently made it look like a toy instead.

I don't know. It seems good on paper... but has it ever worked before?

Remember the first time a corpse in Dead Space came alive? Spooky, right? Second time too. Remember the third time? No? That's because you got trained to stomp on every single corpse you came across, never giving it a chance to rape your anus.

It's not even a video game thing. Anyone remember Odo from Deep Space 9? He was able to infiltrate one of Quark's criminal meeting
as a glass exactly once. After that, no dice, because Quark trained himself to trash rooms before doing anything suspect, to make it impossible to sneak up on him.

I have a feeling this will end up the same way. The first time a coffee pot or pencil surprises you it will be exciting. But soon after, the player will simply trash every room they enter. And then it's not interesting anymore - It's going to be tedious.

Oh boy, we already have a GOTY for 2017! And we aren't even done with 2016, I mean, Quantum Break, our foretold GOTY for 2016 like just came out and it....

...oh.

Nice premise, lots of promises (Like most games, in case pattern recognition is a lost art)...I'll be here waiting for some more gameplay meat and maybe some proper execution of said ideas.

That is probably how it's going to end up, yes.

I suppose they could mitigate it by making the aliens capable of mimicking (non-essential) pick-ups and having the real ones be destroyable. It would give players players an incentive to not systematically trash every room to weed out aliens, since they might end up ruining valuable resources too.

That said, I'm not sure how such a mechanic could be implemented in a way that would be engaging and fun (and balanced, since if done poorly it could potentially lead to the game being unwinnable for some people due to not having enough health/ammo/whatever). Come to think of it, like the 'aliens mimic common objects' thing, it probably sounds better on paper than it would be in execution.
