Something I don't like about college

So I've been attending college for two years now. Yep two long years. I will soon begin to finally take my major classes. I went through two years of core classes, most of which had nothing to do with my major, just so I could get into my major classes.

Now, I feel as if I've wasted time and money doing all of these core classes. Of course, colleges demand that you do these classes.

I'm going into the medical field, but I've had to take 4 English classes, two history classes, a math class, chemistry, biology, psycology, and chemistry and a speech class.

Why must I take those classes that do not apply to me?

For instance, the 4 FUCKING English classes. Why do I need all of that? Also, history classes and math classes.

Psycology, chemistry, biology, I can understand, but why do I need to spend my precious time and money doing classes that do not apply to me?

It really sucks, because I'm paying for my own school and taking out loans.

In a perfect world I would only take what I need, but sadly this is not the case.

Has anyone ever felt the same way about college as I do?

The idea, as I'm sure you're already aware, is that they want to produce well rounded students. In any field, the best people have some general knowledge of all fields. Sure, some of it may never be of use to you, but you never know when it'll turn out you need it. I've spoken to engineers for instance, who tell me that the most important class they ever took was High School english, because the writing skills they learned there really impressed their boss.

Just be patient. You'll be taking rediculously difficult classes related to your major soon enough.

It's due to the whole wave of "liberal education" that's swept higher learning institutions for years. Colleges want to be able to say, "We produce well-rounded adults! Our English majors take Science classes! Our Science majors take English classes! We produce real human beings."

this, of course, leads to hilarious results if taken to its logical extreme, with grossly ill-conceived courses like "Physics for Poets" and other such nonsense.

I'm in accounting. I needed to take 3 english, 3 french, 2 complimentary classes (they can't have anything to do with my field of research), 3 Humanities (because we need to learn how to intereact with and philosophically disect society), and 3 GYm classes

Oh, and about 15 accounting courses... So I have just as many courses that have nothing to do with accounting... it is RETARDED

One day, a crazy man will run up to you with a shotgun and scream "SUMMARIZE THE YEARS IN RUSSIA BETWEEN 1900 AND 2000 WITH ABOVE AVERAGE ENGLISH OR I SHOOT YOU!"

And then you will be glad that you had all those English and History classes.

Not to be strident, but are you fucking stupid? You do understand there isn't JUST medicine. Great doctors don't just read medical texts, Great doctors know an awful lot about an awful lot. Science isn't as clear cut as "This is Science, Nothing else applies". Maths are needed for statistics, calculating odds, understanding numbers HELPS. No one will trust a doctor who talks like a rapper.

You're problem here isn't that you don't need these things, it's that you don't understand why you need these things. If you stick to the medical stuff you will be a very mediocre doctor.
What this guy said, but less insulting and less reportable.

I know how you feel. I'm going to college to get my welding certificate, and I have to take three other classes that don't have anything to do with welding (or as I like to call them, BS classes).

The 1st one is some kind of critical thinking class, I'm not really sure of the name, where we learned about our learning style and how to resolve work place conflict.

The 2nd one is computer applications, witch I am thankfully exempt from because of high school credits, but others in my class tell me its typing memos and making power points.

And the 3rd one is job search skills, witch is important, but all we do is apply for a job online every week (witch I did every summer while in high school) and write a memo abut the company.

All witch cost extra money and time :(

I understand that these extra skills might come in handy one day, but its mostly just common sense sutff. IMO its just so the school can make more money.

You might want to have a basic understanding of the world? Standard education is limited and shallow enough as it is. I think this is an attempt to bring some knowledge to doctors besides cutting people up.

Or the world is unfair. Either way.

I wish I made that post instead.

This is pretty much what happened to my cousin. Now he has no jaw.

Seriously, be grateful for your education.

It's not necessarily the knowledge of the class, it's the ability to learn. If you can learn something you actively disdain, you can think on your feet and learn in the field.

When someone is this blatantly wrong they should be treated like they are stupid until they make the effort to get smarter.

They want you to be educated in more than just your one field, but be at least minimally educated all around.

I will agree, however, that you shouldn't have to pay for it. I think that public education should be expanded to university. A lot of people very much dislike the idea, but a lot of people very much disliked the idea of publicly funded high school education when that campaign began.

most pepole change their minds in the first 2 years a lot, and still do throughout college. The core classes are general classes that would apply to most subjects, having a slight history background is always good, a speech class is great for any field, and math applies to a lot of fields as well. The colleges have to bring most pepole up to speed the first to years as well, because public schools suck, to be honest the 1st two years you are supposed to have covered in high school... All most all the pepole i know who went from a private school tested out of most of the classes, or got easy A's and talked their way into major classes.

The irish systems the same. I want to study psychology purely, except we finish secondary school by taking up to 10 exams, getting marked on 6, the subjects you take are usually English Irish Maths, and most schools teach 4 options, with one other foreign language. It sucks ASS.

It baffles me how many supposedly intelligent people in college think this way. Most people never appreciate how important the liberal arts are in making you an overall well-rounded and worldly person. As an English major I can testify that even most my peers aren't that great when it comes to writing papers-- practically all other majors are pathetic when it comes to writing and reading comprehension. Being bad at that kind of stuff makes people think that you're a retard.

Psycology, chemistry, biology, I can understand,
Your theory might have merit, if - of all the possible options - you hadn't chosen English as your scapegoat. If there is anything a student needs before mastering any sort of higher learning, its grasp of his or her language. Any compromise in one's ability to communicate is a compromise in their ability to learn.

And, since you're entering a medical field and have used the word psycology twice, I'm hoping four courses will be enough.

Money, the only reason they make you take these throwaway classes is for money, that's all there is to it.
