What are some songs that you like listening to that you like doing so for more than just because of the sound? What songs do you like because of the message or because of what you associate the song with?

Here's two of mine.

Ashes of Eden - Breaking Benjamin

Will the faithful be rewarded
When we come to the end
Will I miss the final warning
From the lie that I have lived
Is there anybody calling
I can see the soul within
And I am not worthy
I am not worthy of this

Are you with me after all
Why can't I hear you
Are you with me through it all
Then why can't I feel you
Stay with me, don't let me go
Because there's nothing left at all
Stay with me, don't let me go
Until the Ashes of Eden fall

Will the darkness fall upon me
When the air is growing thin
Will the light begin to pull me
To its everlasting will
I can hear the voices haunting
There is nothing left to fear
And I am still calling
I am still calling to you

Are you with me after all
Why can't I hear you
Are you with me through it all
Then why can't I feel you
Stay with me, don't let me go
Because there's nothing left at all
Stay with me, don't let me go
Until the Ashes of Eden fall

(Don't let go)
Why can't I hear you
Stay with me, don't let me go
Because there's nothing left at all
Stay with me, don't let me go
Until the Ashes of Eden fall
Heaven above me, take my hand
Shine until there's nothing left but you
Heaven above me, take my hand
Shine until there's nothing left but you

I've said before on this forum but I'm a Christian, however one of the things I've never been able to get into is a lot of the modern Christian songs because their tone just doesn't fit with my disposition. This is a song that fits far more for me. My questions, my doubts, my view of the world if it didn't have God, and my hopes and prayers of the next life. The sad but also hopeful tone of the music to the song, starting off very low key but raising up towards the end is a perfect fit for myself.

And my second song.

Fell From the Moon - 3 Doors Down

I fell to the earth below
And I hurt everyone that I know
Well it's gonna be hard
And it's gonna leave scars
Somedays we're born to lose
Today, I fell from the moon

I don't know how to get back
Or how to make up for all that I lack
But I'm gonna get there and I'm not gonna be scared
I got so much to prove
Today, I fell from the moon

'Cause I, I flew above the earth some
I've danced under the warm sun
I've watched the stars light up a room
And now, I hope the heavens help me
I pray that they might let me back
But if they don't what will I do?
Today, I fell from the moon

I don't know where I belong
Or how long they say I've been gone
But I'm gonna be strong
And try to find my way home
That's all that I can do
Today, I fell from the moon

'Cause I, I flew above the earth some
I've danced under the warm sun
I've watched the stars light up a room
And now, I hope the heavens help me
I pray that they might let me back
But if they don't then what will I do?
Today, I fell from the moon
Today, I fell from the moon

This song speaks to my aspergers side. Falling from the moon as if you're an alien, hurting those close to you, for me with my oddities and the difficulties with raising me, not knowing where or how to get to the place I belong if there is one. But it also talks about flying and dancing and seeing beautiful things, which I feel I can see many wonderful things that others don't because of my autism. So it's a double edged sword, the negatives of myself hurt me to think about but the positives that come with it also balance them out that I wouldn't want to not be myself.

At any rate, does anyone else have music that they'd like to share?

"But n*****s got me feelin' I ain't black enough to go to church
Culture shock at barber shops cause I ain't hood enough
We all look the same to the cops, ain't that good enough?
The black experience is black and serious
Cause being black, my experience, is no one hearin' us"

I've always had a soft spot for this song, especially since my dad would sing it to me when I was little. Like a lullaby of sorts.

Ah my...too many. Not posting links, you can find them easily enough if you're interested.

Leonard Cohen, Avalanche. The whole of Songs of Love and Hate really.
"I stepped into an avalanche, it covered up my soul"

Rancid, Junkie Man

Alice in Chains, Junkhead

The Damned, Little Miss Disaster.

The Doors, The End.
Chorus, verses 1, 2, 3, 6

The Misfits. Hybrid moments. Mainly due to some slightly misheard lyrics.
"Oh baby, when you cry, your face is momentary,
You hide your looks behind these [curls]" (actually scars, although that works too)

Offspring, Self Esteem.

Pearl Jam, Once. The meaning I ascribe to it and Eddie Vedder's intent differ, but
"Once upon a time I could control myself,
Once upon a time I could lose myself"

Soundgarden, Like Suicide
"She lived like a murder
But she died just like suicide"

There's something about Cowboy Bebop's 'Gotta Knock A Little Harder' that always gets me more than pretty much any other song.

I like listening to that "I like Big Butts and I cannot lie" song.

Because it speaks to me as a protest against the ruling class and champions the proletariat to rise up and seize the means of production.

Haven't listened to this in a long time, but it both depressed me and picked me up after a certain difficult patch in my life...

hadn't thought bout 3 doors down in a long time. they are a very useful band for learning the guitars/vocals at any age with sounds that are easily reproduced for practicing groups requiring minimal faff, in the way RHCP and others are also, I think that's an oft undervalued factor in some ways

um, crap, too many to choose and am ever so frustratingly indecisive. will try to be brief and restrained

fuck, this isn't restrained, sorry, I'll stop

ok, done now

The most bittersweet song for me. Memories of my brother, rest his soul, and simultaneously the theme for my depression. I love listening to it, but hate it at the same time.

A lot of songs have an emotional impact on me, but only one runs deep, Massive attack?s ?Teardrop? (aka: ?the theme to House? to you lame-Os who knew nothing of this brilliant song before pop culture misappropriated it for a bullshit TV show.) It was the ringtone I used on my phone for the first girlfriend I met 8 months after my divorce. I was at a very cynical point in my life, but she made me fall for her completely. Like a cheesy romantic movie, she was drop-dead gorgeous, exotic, funny, insatiable sexual appetite, she was possessive of me and my time (I?m a sucker for the jealous type;) she was the whole damn package, literally the best thing to happen to me, like a dream. Every night, she?d call me right before she went to bed; my heart would leap at the sound of that phone singing: ?teardrop on the fire, feathers on my breath?? We?d talk for about an hour, say ?I love you,? and go to sleep.

Aaaaaaaaand six months later, I found out she was married. To a cop. Fucking DEVASTATED. Of course, we broke it off, ?it? being mostly my heart, and I didn?t expect to hear from her ever again, but she called me about year later, and I hadn?t changed her ringtone; ?My Love? was the name that popped up on the display. I almost puked. We talked for a few minutes, every word from her mouth like a dagger in my heart, but she just wanted to apologize. She explained that she didn?t mean to ?cheat,? but was trying to get out of an unhappy marriage, that she did love me, and didn?t intend to allowed ?us? to go as far we did before she could leave her husband; they?d since reconciled and were trying to work it out. I forgave her, hung up and deleted the ringtone. That was over 10 years ago; I?ve had several other relationships, a couple pretty serious, and I?m in a great 3-year-long relationship right now, but to this day, whenever I hear that song, I wince and get a sharp, sinking feeling in my gut. I even kept that old cell phone until as recently as 2017 when I found it in a box of random shit while moving in with my current girlfriend. I plugged it, read the last few messages between me and ?My Love,? winced, then tossed it in the trash.
