So I just downloaded the demo for Sonic Generations, and I'm rather unimpressed. The demo only has one 2D Sonic map (maybe the 3D maps are so good they don't want to spoil us?) based on Green Hills, and already some issues are kinda apparent.

With all the environment 3D it can sometimes be hard to tell what's a platform and what's background, the enemies don't really stand out that well, but thankfully you can at least spin dash by holding down jump. But surprisingly no spin jumps ala Sonic 3. Feels like Sega is going to miss the mark again......

Anyone else give it a try yet?

No, I haven't, nor will I.

Sonic was great back in the olden times, when graphics were 8-bit and the drowning music terrified you.

Ever since he's gone 3D....... do I really need to finish?

I've given it a shot and felt the speed was there but while he's zipping along, for some reason I tended to lose track of him.
Not that it was too fast or anything but it just seems a blur as opposed to previous Sonic games, where the background zipped past yet still it focussed on the lil' blue guy right in the centre

Well, I enjoyed it!

At least it did better than what they have crapped out in recent years.

I believe that's damning with faint praise.

Pappy: Sad thing, like I said the demo is 2D, but still not the same magic.

Petey: I noticed that, it's like the developers are yelling at us "LOOK WE CAN DO FAST! HE'S SONIC! WOOOOOOSH", but it's a little too much. Actually I think he gets to fast to quickly. Unlike the old games I don't feel like I'm building momentum but just being shot out.

Strike: Atleast your not a werehog, agreed.

I never found Sonic to be quite a good franchise anyways. The early games were fun but still filled with horrible if not outright devilish level design that you cannot get through without a cristal ball.
Still it was somehow incredibly fun, the mascot was cute and the music was nice.
I havent played many 3D sonic games, just heroes, which wasnt that horrible, just kinda headache-inducing because of the bright colors.

I don't think there's ever gonna be a universally liked Sonic game anymore because of the extreme polarization of its fans.

That was part of the fun really, or Sega kids are just masochistic.
The level design by satan or the headache inducing colors? XD
All of it really. By the end of the game, as you take on Robotnik for the last time, you know exactly how much you can handle before your eyes bleed and you start seizuring. And if you survive, it's the most gratifying feeling possible. But if you run out of continues you rage quit and by a Nintendo console. So was the 90s.

@DuckBunny: Much agreed. While I have many memories playing the old Sonic, dude needs a break. Possibly at a detox. Give us a chance to just be happy he's around again.

I've been a little annoyed by this statement for a while. I really enjoy some 3-D Sonic games, like Unleashed. I actually played the PS3 adaption of the very first Sonic game, and guess what?
I DIDN'T HAVE FUN.
I often found myself slipping off of platforms because the control scheme better suited gameplay that involved, you know, running. There were far too many finicky platform sections that I simply wasn't expecting from a Sonic game. What with all the complaints I've heard about how Sonic isn't fast anymore paired with the 'Old games are so much better' argument, I would've thought he'd be fast. But the whole time, I was thinking "I'd rather be playing an exciting game, like the underrated 3-D one lying on the floor a few feet away."
Sonic 2 was a little better - smoother, faster, fewer platforming sections - but it still wasn't all that great due to a psychotic difficulty level and the fact that I still found myself slipping off platforms far too often.
There's this thing called nostalgia, my friend. It can be a very powerful thing, and unless you prove me otherwise, I can only assume that you are under its sway.

Ever since he's gone 3D you've been part of the unpleasable fanbase right? =p

It's getting rather tiresome to see "fans" shoot down game after game even if Sega is delivering them ~exactly~ what they asked for. Maybe Sonic Team will one day just have to take Yahtzee's advice about fans to heart.

Really most people think of Sonic 2 when they think of classic Sonic games. And it was psychotic but most Sega age games were. Arcade style, you really had to be there to still crave it.

So yes, nostalgia. Pure pure evil nostalgia.

A lot of people seem to enjoy it, hell, even Retro is enjoying it despite the physics not being 1:1, I haven't tried it myself because I have no 360/PS3 but it's possible a demo will come out for the PC (Information about the PC version coming to Steam got leaked out a couple of weeks ago).

Actually, ever since sonic heroes.

Adventure 2 was the last amazing sonic game in my opinon. I thought heroes and shadow was meh, and 2006 was okay.

After that they were... painful.

I honestly think the old school Sonic games are very overrated lol. But I do agree that the uber-fast-paced plataforming is not best suited for 3D.

Eh, kind of. I'm more a part of the fanbase who played some of the new games, and found them to be a bad experience.

I don't just shoot down games because that's what the masses do, I give them a try, like I have with most of the new Sonic games. But, when I find myself playing most of the games in a series, and not enjoying them, I don't see a reason to continue playing that series.

First, yes, of course I'm under the sway of nostalgia. She is a beautiful lady, and I cannot resist her siren song. I'll always love the games I played as a kid, nothings going to change that.

Second, that doesn't mean I automatically hate the new 3D games either. I play them, give them a try, and find that I don't like them. That's why I'm not playing any new Sonic games, because I've played the ones that come before them, and do not enjoy them.

Third... are you agreeing with me or saying I'm biased? No offense, but your post is a little hard to interpret. On one hand you same I'm just being nostaglic, on the other you saying you're not having fun either, so... I'm a little confused. Sorry.
