Sony Says They've Won a Battle, Not the War

E3 may have been a victory for the PS4, but Sony isn't about to get complacent.

At this point it's pretty clear that Sony gained some serious leverage over Microsoft at this year's E3, winning over a massive number of gamers and causing more than a few Xbox fans to jump ship. While the gamers of the internet are already hailing Sony as the victor of the next generation, the PlayStation bosses aren't so short-sighted as to think they're in the clear. Sony Computer Entertainment UK bigwig Fergal Gara acknowledges that E3 was "one good day," and there's still a long way to go.

"Winning is determined by a much longer timescale," Gara says. "We were very pleased with how our messages went down at E3. We aim to be the best for gamers, and this was a key step in that direction. E3 is important for early momentum and generating pre-orders. But it is only one step along. We feel we had a good day but there is loads more hard work to do, and we are focused on that."

It's refreshing to see that the company's success at E3 isn't going to its collective head. Rather than ride out the positive PR from its press event, Sony seems to be buckling down to make sure they follow through on their promises. "If we want to be more successful," says Gara, "we have to earn it."

Now this is the kind of thing that Microsoft executives need to learn, namely how not to sound like a twat when talking publicly. If this is the attitude Sony are going forward with then it's going to take something monumental for them to fuck up.

Time will be the judge, and it's encouraging to see the predicted winners still training hard for the main event.

Well, Infamous 3 is a launch title. That's another plus in my book.

It will be interesting to see how this plays out. Can they avoid the same stumbles (Which I swear to God, they make daily) of their competition? Time will tell.

Also, I sort of get the feeling Sony sees Nintendo as competition as well. Just looking at some of the moves they made. I can't help but think they want to take a bite out of Nintendo, too. And with Knack, I sort of feel like it's intended to target Nintendo's audience. It looks great, just a feeling I get. Also a launch title and not just another grey and brown FPS. A feather in their cap.

In the end, though, all Sony has to do is not act stupid and let Microsoft be their own worst enemy. Yet, make sure people are aware of their console. Do that, and they will be hard to beat.

Who would think otherwise? The opening salvo isn't even loaded yet. E3 is more akin to getting some successful propaganda out in the public view.

They're off to a good start. Let's hope it doesn't go to their head and that the LINUX crowd has forgiven them finally. It's important to remember that this is still a corporation we're talking about. Not our buddies. Pro-consumer is a great focus for Sony. But it's not like they didn't get here through some tough stupid anti-consumer decisions in the past. And learning those lessons the hard way cost them this current gen.

Lesson learned? Good to hear it Sony. Keep up the good work and prove that you deserve the praise and I'll stick by you the whole way. Falter once, and you will have to earn it back. Loyalty is for suckers. A company needs to earn, and keep earning my respect, business, and patronage.

Agreed. Can't wait to play it. It's one of my pre-orders for when I get my PS4. :)

There are many ways Sony could take advantage of the current situation, even making some choices that would hurt in the short run, but pay off big in the long run.

Bundles have not been announced yet for the systems for instance....allowing Sony to offer even more in a bundle deal then they already are. The price of games for the PS4 has not been announced yet either..which is one place Sony could actually end up losing to Xbox if they price their new games over $60 (which is likely actually).

I strongly suggest they initially sell games at $60 as well, even if they do have to boost the price on them later (and possible even on some at launch). Having most games sell for $60 would be good enough for now. If they really wanted to THRASH xbox though, they could offer a lower price for digital versions of games (downloaded through the network and not purchased with a disc/manual etc). Pass the savings directly on to the customer there...and yet again they would be putting another nail into the Xbox Coffin.

Right now Sony has Microsoft on the ropes...it's an opportunity to really pound their opponent if they want to take advantage of it. A bit less profit now...could mean having a much, MUCH larger percentage of the market long term....which could lead to much larger long term profits.

If I was making the decisions, I would aim to maximize the advantage they have and capture as much of the market as possible. They could....if played right, even literally KILL the xbox by ensuring it sells so bad they scrap it eventually.

Sony has a history of retroactively removing features used as selling points from their consoles so their words are cheap.
It is advisable not to trust a single thing they say.
We'll see what they will actually do.

Sadly, I just checked that after seeing something where they mention it was going to be First Quarter of 2014. It seems that's the release date (so February?). Guess that list I had at the store wasn't as accurate as I thought. Too bad. Still, I can't wait to get my hands on that game. I'm intrigued by the smoke powers.

Sony, winning by showing they're not stupid, ego maniacs or pure evil.
I like it, now keep it up.

Lists of PS4 bundles and prices on next gen games can be found in the link.

I highly doubt prices are going to change since that'd put off many people who preordered.

That's OK. InFamous is worth waiting for. It was, and I mean this with no hint of irony or sarcasm, my PS3 killer app. I bought the system to play Ratchet & Clank and God of War 3. But InFamous and it's sequel are definitely the surprise hits I wasn't expecting.

I like how every time I hear the latest shitstorm from Microsoft, there's pleasant news from Sony within the next 24 hours. I've never been more confident switching from one console to another than I am right now, making the leap from 360 to PS4.

I'm not saying that Sony can do no wrong (Ps+ Mandatory >_< ) But Jesus Christ, it's almost like they're using Microsoft as a metaphorical rag to wipe up spills of black, oozing consumer hatred so they don't get their feet wet by this point.

Jesus that was a tortured metaphor sorry.

On the other hand this is exactly the correct attitude for them to have and I salute them with my wallet.

Glad to see they're taking things seriously. The struck a mighty blow against Xbox One, but the race/war isn't over. The tortoise and the hare story comes to mind. Not sure which to call Sony at this point. Could call them the hare since they're out in front. Don't get a big head and keep on track. Or they could be the tortoise taking things nice and slow while MS is running at full speed yelling how they got things in the bag. See both kinda work. That being said I'd not want to have them stumble right before the finish line. I for one am very happy with the releases coming to PS3 even as they gear up for the PS4. Kingdom Hearts and FFX remastered. I love RPGs hope more will follow.
