I am a proud owner of a ps3 and until recently was enjoying very much the entertainment that i received from my 60GB console, smirking at all the ps3 owners with only 2 usb ports and no flash memory ports.
However, around a week ago my ps3 decided to break showing the flashing red lights that i am sure most are familiar with. I first consulted the trusty manual and found it was supposed to be an overheating problem. After much readjustment and around 24 hours of rest i hoped for good results but my effors were in vain and sure enough it was still not working.
After consulting the internet and found a variety of explanations and tips, ranging from it is an overheating problem to it was dead and i should be distraught as a result. As i bought the ps3 close to its release my warranty had long since expired and so i was unable to get i fixed for free from sony (and i wasn't going to pay £150 for them to fix it)

All this may sound like old news but i think that the fact that sony were releasing a ps3 slim in under a week at a reduced price of £249.99 is much to perfect to be coincidental.

i have preceded to purchase a ps3 slim and am happy with it as it is on par with my old 'trusty' fatty but i am left with a lingering suspicion.

What do you think???

Are you suggesting that Sony is targeting you specifically? Now if mass PS3's starting failing and having issue then this might be valid. This is just a coincidence, and there is no grand scheme from Sony.

1.) Release bad console.

I don't think it was a sign of pre-determined obsolesence. My PS3 is still going strong and forever will do (hopefully)

I'm not about to shell out £249.99 for a system I already have. And if it fails, I'll go back to my 360.

Pretty much all consoles have been more unreliable than acceptable for a while now. Or all household tech for that matter. I just refuse to believe we don't have the know-how to make stuff that keeps working for decades this day when I own a TV made in the 70s or 60s that still works just fine.
Manufacturers just at one point realized that making virtually unbreakable stuff isn't very profitable, but if everyone's TV breaks every 2-5 years the market will stays nearly as healthy as it ever was.

It applies to every tech market that doesn't naturally keep renewing itself every now and then, and sometimes even then for plain greediness.
However PS3 is not one of those systems that is delibirately made to break down. Why? The last thing Sony wants is an demand of millions extra PS3s. They still don't get any profit out of it.

Yeah, 360 is definitely a safer bet...

Are you saying that Sony engineered a super-virus to squeeze an extra 90 pounds from you or that God hates you? Because I'm pretty sure neither are correct.

here's a diabolical plan for you:

1 design a very expensive console
2 let your competitors release their box first
3 start with a very small selection of exclusives
4 wait until the hardware becomes outdated
5 ???
6 profit

Sony products have always had a reputation for built-in obsolescence, even before they started making consoles.

Apparently in Japan, it's referred to as "the Sony Warranty" - the common assumption that those products will break just after the warranty ends.

I've experienced it myself with multiple PS2's failing, each time just after the warranty ended, and each time Sony would charge about 3/4 of the cost of a new one just to replace it with a refurbished one, so for me it made more financial sense to buy a new PS2 with a new warranty rather than spend an extortionate amount for a refurbished old PS2 with no warranty.

However, I don't know whether it is a actually an evil plot on Sony's part, or if it just that as humans it's preferable to believe in conspiracies when we've struck by the same bit of bad luck 3 or 4 times repeatedly.

I think that Sony is just rather good at providing a warranty just before the average length of time that an item will cease working. Not that they actually build in functions that make it stop working.
