What soundtracks do you feel are superior in their own right to the form of media they are attached to?

For me it has to be Lord of The Rings:

What are yours? talk, discuss, question and rate these soundtracks.

My favorite thing I like about the Halo games is the music pieces. I think the music from LoTR compliments the movie very well though, on its own its still a masterpiece of art.

I can think of few examples...

Aggressive Expansion, from the Dark Knight:

Road to Chicago, from Road to Perdition:

And pretty much any tune from Ghibli studio's :p

Hmm... I must admit, I don't really understand the question. Which soundtracks are better than the entire medium for which they are the score?

Hmm, I don't think there are any, but I'm extremely, and I mean EXTREMELY fond of all Kingdom Hearts soundtracks (though much is remixed songs from the first game). Then again, I really like the games a lot on their own, too, but the music is just so incredibly moving to me that without it, I don't think those games wouldn't be very good.

I completely agree, I love those soundtracks.

I thought the Halo soundtracks were brilliantly made. I'm also a huge fan of the soundtrack for Band of Brothers, which is composed by Michael Kamen.

I remember Final Fantasy X's soundtrack more than the actual game, so that's my pick.

The Matrix trilogy had a better soundtrack than the films. And I freaking love the films.

Also the Devil May Cry soundtracks deserve special mention for being awesome, but slightly less awesome than the games themselves

Apart from LotR...the Final Fantasy VII soundtrack is memorable for me and more recently I liked the Dragon Age soundtrack.

I think the question is really just asking what soundtrack is more memorable than the thing it comes from. For example the aforementioned Halo. A lot of people think the quality of the music is far superior to the quality of the game.

For me, I'd say most of the music from Tales of Symphonia. While I do hate that game, I will admit that the music in it is pretty good. To the point where the quality of the music seems very odd when compared to the quality of the story.

At least that's what I think you're talking about. And yeah, I'd definitely say it's some good music, but I don;t think it surpasses the game in terms of quality. Though being a primary Protoss player I have to begrudge Terran for getting the better themes. Protoss have 1 song that's okay, but nothing special. I have to listen to it loop over and over.

While I do like Jeunet's Alien: Resurrection, I have to say that John Frizzell's score was the most sublime aspect of it.

I personally think that song has the potential to become great
But then again the game is good too so it might not surpass it.

Hmm... okay then... I would say Halo, except I adore the games and universe as a whole. But the soundtracks are freaking amazing.

I might actually say the first Gears of War. It was a great game, but I later got the soundtrack for my cousin, since it's one of his favorite games, and I didn't expect much of it. I guess just 'cause you wouldn't expect too amazing of a soundtrack from a game about hardcore manly men shooting up hardcore manly aliens. But I got music like this: brilliant stuff.

Dark, intense, but with a dash of heroism and tragedy. Really, it exemplifies the Gears of War universe very well, even if the games don't show quite the same level of complexity.
