Left 4 Dead's Special infected are fantastic and are well balanced but are also quite good. I hope that in Left 4 Dead 2 there will be some sort of Infected that makes you keep moving. Like some sort of Living Slime thing which follows your progress slowly to make sure you kept moving to add more fear. If you fell to far behind it just choked you to death. However Im looking forward too the Wandering Witch which is going to add some serious fun to the game
I always felt the idea of infected is to enfeeble/ slow down the survivors as much as they can. Everything is about how much you can slow them down because in the end all extra time they spend not going to the safe room is attrition time for the infected. Granted the idea of forcing them forward in a time that they aren't ready for would have its benefits.
That being said and reading that older thread, I do like the spider idea with a twist that I didn't see listed. Let it effect the environment, for example: It has a boomer style interface. What if the "web" could effectively block off an alleyway for a short time, 8-10 seconds, by "spitting" from one wall to the other(or the reticle is a square area that will show you where the "web" will hit, and pulling the trigger just launches this ever-expanding square area). This could have various uses, ideally, splitting the survivors in half temporarily if they are in two mini groups, or coating a ladder preventing its temporary use, or blocking a door to a dead end room one survivor ran into effectively jailing them short term.
The details are most important but I'm not gonna label them per se, such as Infected HP, recharge time, what hitting the survivor with it directly will do(limit movement, unable to shoot and/or smack in some fashion like all Specials do now). Two ideas would be, survivors are SOL for those 10 seconds, can't walk through it(maybe can shoot through it) this would be offset by a longer recharge time. The other is that you can have one guy walk into it to destroy it but it effectively snares him(this wouldn't cause damage) but a shorter recast time.
