I was playing Stalker and it was very difficult in the begining but after going through the game it began to get easier.

This brings me to my point when it was difficult when two hits was game over it was increasingly fun. Ok the stalkers that you would fight were really difficult but I think the zombies had it right. A few hits kills them a few kills you.

I am struggeling to think of any other games which are along these lines but I have to say that I enjoyed feeling vulnerable rather than as if I was a tank.

Pripyat got real easy after a few hours of scavenging guns and ammo, and falling into an Artifact goldmine didn't hurt. Out once you get the good detectors, there are only a few enemies to fear and places to avoid.

I have a fond memory from the train yard. I was going through it to fetch some item someone wanted and decided to talk with the guys there. Suddenly one lad got shot in the head right in front of me by a batch of bandits coming in and suddenly i was fighting off a damn takeover. It made me fear for my virtual life more than Fallout 3 and NV has made me and they have super mutants!

I tried to play shadow of chernobyl, but it had this awful bouncing camera effect and I just felt seasick whilst playing it.
It's a shame, I think if it weren't for that I'd really enjoy the game.

I know the feeling well is one of the most scarry games I have played beacuse of that. Loved every minute of it. I just wish there were more games like that where you can be really good or really bad.

Sort of like counter strike but with a story I suppose.

Mod it out then.

Pretty sure I used a mod for that the first time I played it, but then I changed it out and sorted it.

Cheers for that. Only just moved to PC from consoles and completely forgot that mods exist.

I may actually be able to play this game!

You NEED to get the Stalker Complete Mod.

It's the one everyone gets, it fixes tons of bugs, tweaks settings and adds tons of effects and adds a bit of extra content.
Thanks, I'll definitely give it a try first chance I get.

There's difficulty settings in S.T.A.L.K.E.R.? What variables do they change, how often the bloody game crashes?

SoC and CoP are fine but Clear Sky is just insane. Every npc has nearly perfect accuracy even with the shittiest guns and if you take cover you get literally spammed with grenades. And everyone has massive health. I don't think I ever used the quickload button so much in a game.
This is not what I call fun.

Stalker was a bit of a shocker to me. I was somewhat surprised when it finally came out, and before the "ripping off other titles resources" thing surfaced, I already died along the lines of a dozen times - at the very, very least. I walked unter the railway lines, got zapped. I managed to cross the forcefield, turned right, got shot. I tried another path, more in the open, I was welcomed with another hail of bullets... and died. In the beginning, I spent more time dead than actually running around and doing something more useful and fun. But it made me think. I wanted to play it. In the end, it sucked me in more than World of Woecraft.

In the end, the endgame turned brutally hard - not always realistic, though - and made the beginning seem much more laid back. But that game put the proper fear of superiour firepower in me. If there was some troops ahead and I had enough ammunition and some full-auto to deliver the goods, OK. If bad guys found me while I was down with five bullets, two peas, a safety pin and three nice guns without any ammo whatsoever, I knew I'd rather run in the opposite direction... and fast.

Together with multiple endings and some radioactive fun, and some great sightseeing in abandoned places, the ultra brutal and very hard start made my learning curve steep like naked rock... and gravitational pull; think proper Gran Turismo, cooking or chess - it's great once you know what you're doing, and it's not much of a beauty to behold when you're still getting the basics down. I like those bits of realism. It was very punishing and unforgiving, but it made success so much sweeter.

Strange, i've only ever had it crash twice.

OP:

I like how hard the difficulty is. It makes anomaly fields fun as hell to try and navigate and every fight I did in the beginning needed to be planned.

Of course later on I got a sniper and a shotgun and just switched between them depending on what I faced, so the challenge was gone. Still was fun though, a vortex can still destroy you and if you're in an exo they will pretty much kill you every time.

They only thing I found hard about S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Was the fact that they made you have a realistic carry weight but also kill over 200 people on a mission there and back. -.-

If you are going to make the limitations realistic at least make the enemies stay dead...
