Stalling a Standard

This probably isn't the best site to ask this but I'm learning to drive standard and I stall often. I know that I'll eventually get better with this as I practice more but even my dad still stalls sometimes and he has been driving standard for years.

My question is what are the risks of stalling in an intersection? I noticed today that you have to wait for much larger openings in traffic for incase you stall or have trouble getting going. I don't much care if I stall before I get into the intersection and someone honks at me but lets say I establish myself in the intersection to make a left turn, the light starts changing red, and when I try to go I stall. Or it's still green, I see an opening and as I start rolling across the street I stall. I know how to get going again after a stall but it takes a few seconds which is more then enough time for me to get T-boned by another car or, for the highway I'm thinking off, likely a semi.

If you have never driven a standard then please don't post as I would like to know from someone who understands the problem I am having. Thanks.
