Yes extremely late to the party I know but I finally got around to playing this game today and just needed to get it off my chest. Some background - I like the Wii U and actually don't mind motion controls for the most part. In fact in some games I thought the gamepad integration made the game better

That said I now understand the negativity surrounding this game when it was released. I was one of the people who thought "Ah people are just moaning. It can't be that bad". Now that I've actually played it though I can safely say yeah it is that bad. Whoever thought aiming with the gyroscope was a good idea needs a good talking to. I played this game for a good few hours and felt like I was fighting the controls the whole time. Most of the deaths I suffered were because of this and the fact that there was no option to turn them off like in Splatoon baffles me.

The worst thing is that without these controls this would probably have been the best entry in the series since Star Fox 64 (seeing that's it's essentially Starfox 64 HD).

Anyway rant over...although this wasn't really a rant more an expression of disappointment. Remember when you're parents would say "I'm not angry just disappointed" and that felt worse than being shouted at. Well Nintendo I'm not angry, I'm just disappointed.

I'm glad that the newest Zelda got rid of that. Why didn't they make the gyroscope controls just optional like in the Star Fox 64 3DS remake is beyond me...

I don't know why people are saying this like its a surprise as games Star Fox is not that great to begin with Just these on rails arcady Flight Combat Games. To this day I regret buying Star Fox 64 on the nintendo Wii Virtual Console instead of Ogre Battle 64.

I rather have a new F-Zero than a new Star Fox.

I genuinely tried and kept expecting the controls to just click but they didn't *shrugs*

As far as I know it's essentially the GOTY edition of Neo.

I generally like the Wii U. The control scheme alone put me off buying Star Fox Zero; that's how offputting it can be.

I have tried motion control in a pretty large number of games, and generally do not enjoy it, and turn it off when I can (like in Star Fox 64). The idea of switching your view from the TV to the gamepad in order to be able to see everything or shoot also sounds like a frustrating ball-ache.

I would have bought it if there was a traditional control scheme.

And I've said this since Mario Galaxy's release; as long as they have different control options then I don't mind motion controls, because I fucking hate motion controls. It's partly why I'm pleased with Breath of the Wild too.

Not like that alone is likely to make me buy a Switch, but, well... Might as well hope for something to come of that Wave Race trademark Nintendo filed some time back.

It's technically an updated re-release. There's additional tracks and vehicles in addition to a graphics upgrade. So kind of both a new game and a remake.

I believe anyone who complains about the controls, are just not giving them enough of a chance. They're perfectly fine once accustomed to.
And how much is enough of a chance? I played the game for a good 4 hours and never got used to them. If after that amount of time I'm still finding the controls uncomfortable and awkward to the extent that it's spoiling my enjoyment of the game then I don't think the problem lies entirely with me

I bought it. Played it. Scowled at the idea of motion controls. Literally tried everything possible to avoid it.

Took some getting used to, but I don't mind the controls at all at this point. I wish the gyroscope didn't fall out of sync so often, that's what annoys me the most. But when I play it, I don't even have to look at the gamepad once to know where I'm firing in normal levels, and only have to peek during some boss fights like the Aquarossa. I've gotten used to it to the point I can play it as normal. Granted, that sounds a bit more advanced than 75% of the population who tried it, so eh.

I see what Nintendo was trying to do, and honestly, I like it a fair bit. But I can also easily see why people hate it

I don't think the controls are all that bad. In the earlier levels you can still more or less play it as you're used to and in later levels you will have grown a bit more accustomed to the new way of handling things.

But I still don't entirely like the game. I think the controls overshadow other problems the game has like the insanely short length of most stages.

You needn't have looked further than Yahtzee's review of the game.

"Because, fuck you, WE WANT MONEY! PREASE UNDERSTAND!" - Nintendo, probably.

But yeah, Zero suffers in any section isn't the arwing in a straight path. The ending fight with Andross is also godawful. I'd say play it in co-op, gunner/pilot mode for maxmimum satisfaction.

After seeing Jim Sterling's review, I returned the game and I got my full money back. This is partly why I am not getting the Switch. I am sick and tired of forced gimmicks and motion controls. All they had to do was give me option controls like DK: Tropical Freeze, and I would have kept the game. Yet, Miyamoto and his team could not even do that.
