Star Wars Battlefront 2 Planned for 2017 Release

Surprising no-one, EA games has confirmed that a sequel to last year's Star Wars Battlefront will release in 2017.

I hope you weren't expecting EA games to waste too much time on last year's Star Wars Battlefront [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/tag/view/star%20wars%20battlefront] because a fully-fledged sequel is already in the works, for a 2017 release. Additionally, EA has announced that Visceral Games - the folks behind the Dead Space series - are working on their own Star Wars game, which should be released some time in 2018.

No real details were revealed about Battlefront 2 - all we know is that it will contain content from The Force Awakens, something which the first game deliberately shied away from [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/165635-No-Force-Awakens-Era-DLC-for-Star-Wars-Battlefront]. As for the Visceral Star Wars game, we know that it is being helmed by Uncharted 1-3 creative director Amy Hennig.

Star Wars Battlefront was released in late 2015, alongside a rather expensive season pass [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/166102-Star-Wars-Battlefronts-2016-DLC-Plans-Revealed] promising a trickle of extra content throughout 2016. I'm sure the announcement of a sequel so soon is will disappoint fans of the game who were hoping that EA and Dice would support the original for years to come, as it did with Battlefield 4.

The real question though... will this actually be fleshed out and have single player campaign? If so, you might get my money. Might!

"Our fans were so thrilled with the lack of single player options, and over-simplified combat, that we are bringing it back even better! Now there will be no single player training maps, and there will only be one class fueled by microtransactions that will insta-kill your opponents!"

I played the first Star Wars Battlefront--as in, the one that came out in 2015. And I had enough fun for what it was. Didn't buy the season pass, because after I earned the platinum I was kind of bored with the game, but even I have to scratch my head and go, "Wow...really? Already?"

I mean, they haven't even finished the DLC for the first one, and they're already announcing the second one? For this year (I mean next year, my bad)?! Okay, EA, let me make this perfectly clear:

Unless you have pulled out ALL the stops and listened to pretty much ALL of the criticism of the first game, there is no way I'm even touching this. Even I, being the die-hard Star Wars fan that I am, have my limits. If I don't get a single player--and I don't mean good, but great single player--if space combat isn't back, if the Clone Wars era, original era, and the new stuff aren't ALL included from the start, then no. Just no. I'm not buying the same game with a shiny new coat of paint when the paint isn't even that old yet.
This game is going to need some serious stuff if wants me to even consider it, let alone buy it. And announcing it while you're still working on the first one is not bestowing hope to me.

I hope they pull a Battlefront 2 and essentially rerelease the first game and add new stuff, hopefully the New Era. I just really want to kill some Resistance scum in snazzy new First Order Stormtrooper armor.

If not, then I guess maybe I'll pick it up a year later on Black Friday?

Well dice is known for quite good multi, but pretty crummy single player. Their best single player was Bad Company 2. Considering this is in dev while battlefield 1 is. While Ill bet it will have one, I have doubts about how good it could be.

Its 2016, so not this year bub.

OT: I'll probably get it. Maybe not Day 1 but I liked the first well enough. This time, though... they'd better have space battles. Otherwise I'll be extremely disappointed.

That seems like the only thing they could add that I think would justify a full sequel.
I can't imagine them being able to make the game look any better since it already looks fucking real

I think it's revealing that the brilliant minds behind this game are the same to name the fourth entry in the series "2".

How long does anyone expect the "Battlefront 1" servers to last? Pretty soon, we're going to have online only games shut down the day of the next game's release.

good thing i didnt gave in to it and got the game. the beta was all fine and good and the graphics are still amazing but certainly lack of content. angry joe summed it up pretty well too and gave it a fair score were others gave it excellent scores by simply being blinded by the star wars title.
origin already offered a 4 hour play through of 1, which usually means they are desperate to sell more titles or try to indicate that this game is a masterpiece and convert you to buy it. well, didnt work for me.
but if part 2 should have a worthy campaign mode that is not finished in a few hours, i might get it.

As of the current time or writing there's only just under 21,000 people playing. At it's peak in the last 24 hours there were a grand smacking total of around 46,000 people playing. That's really not great for 3 platforms. There's some other links on there as well. At least battlefront is doing better than hardline but it's being blown out of the water by Battlefield 4.

Honestly though, I don't think Dice/EA will change anything at all so long as people keep buying the games they churn out.

But why? Why not just support the orig-...oh.

...And in 2017, I bet drastically fewer will be playing the first game. Bit of a shame for the people who bought that one, I guess. These boys certainly know how to reward customer loyalty.

Call me when they make an actual sequel to Battlefront II, instead of Star Wars: Battlefield. The really sad thing is that the original Battlefronts were themselves clearly modeled after Battlefield, but had pretty damn good singleplayer options. And the content was much, much deeper than Battlefront 2015.

I tried to explain the sad state of AAA games to my grandmother today. I told her "Imagine if a popular author was writing a novel that takes place in a beloved and established franchise, like the Star Wars universe. Imagine this author only completes 2 chapters - about 45 pages - and then is pressured by her publisher to sell it as is for $80 in order to meet the deadline for the movie, and promises to finish the rest of the book over time. 6 months later, she finishes another chapter, and then says she has abandoned the first book in order to work on the next book. That is the video games industry."

My grandma scratched her head and asked, "how is that even allowed to happen? Who buys that shit in the first place?"

I sometimes wish I was this easy going. It would sure make my world seem brighter. Unfortunately, it is not so.

OT: This is king dick behaviour. They pumped out expensive trash we were told that would be greatly improved through a pricey season pass for extra content, and instead they're shifting their focus to a sequel because EA.

I hope they're human enough to offer the original Battlefront owners a very cheap deal.

At first glance I thought this was about the 2005 Battlefront II getting a re-release. I has a sad now.

You see the confusion that happens when you reboot titles, entertainment industries? Stop it already! I pity future movie and gaming historians; they're going to have one hell of a time keeping all of this straight.
