So recently, Rob Pardo, Executive VP of Blizzard, stated that SC2 would not support LAN features, which have made the original SC so great. He hopes that people will use Battlenet, and also hopes to cut down piracy on the game. How do you all feel about this?

Eh, I don't really mind.
Most of my friends in real life aren't really into games like Starcraft anyways.
So yeah, I guess I'm fine.

hmm, i can see that being annoying if you dont have access to a decent internet connection, but as long as you both have the internet you can play in the same house so i dont see it being that much of a problem.

Still would be a nice feature to have. Wont put me off buying it though.

Well as it stands Im still more annoyed by the fact that they splitted the game up into 3 purchases, other than that I doubt I'll miss lan too much anyway

I don't mind. Most of the people a game with regularly are scattered all over the country. I don't get to LAN much.

I think this decision alienated the fans who stuck with them after they announced they plan to split the game in three. This basically means in order for SC2 to be a tournament game like SC1, the venue must have one helluva internet connection. A few milliseconds of lag makes a huge difference in competitive play.

The new Bnet infrastructure is kinda being marketed right now as the end-all and be-all networking solution by Blizzard (all signs point to it, for me, anyway). If it turns out even just a tiny bit not perfect, expect their fans to pick up pitchforks and torches.

It's idiotic, it's impossible to prevent piracy anyway, someone will come up with something. Not really more than a minor nuisance, just very very pointless.

I rarely play LAN matches as it is I used too with Dawn of War, me and my friends would make a weekend of it.
I doubt that will happen for myself with SC2 so I'm not annoyed with it, but I can see how people wouldn't be too happy.

It won't matter to me unless they start charging for battle.net, in which case I'd uninstall and immediately sell the game on ebay or amazon.

I can see what they're trying to do. And it's a better solution than say, SecuROM. I'm guessing they will re-enable LAN play a few years or so after the last expansion is released.

Same with me. The starcraft team can just siphon money from the WoW team if they feel like they're losing anything.

I just wonder if they will come up with more things that will make me second guess my will to buy the damn thing. first the three installments, which iirc will be full price, and mandatory unless you:

a. only want to play the terran campaign.
b. have no desire to play online whatsoever.

and then they come with the no LAN "feature" in order to "prevent piracy" like that would make the slightest bit of difference to the sequel of a game that STILL SELLS COPIES TO THIS DAY. Having the only multiplayer option be fully reliant on an internet connection is completely, mindnumbingly idiotic for a competitive RTS. period.

I fully expect them to announce a third "feature" (my guess would be charging for use of Battle.net) that will make me finally say "go fuck yourselves" and just pirate the damn thing out of pure spite like i do with most DRM laden crapfests from EA, and it will be a sad day when i put Blizzard in the same category as EA when it comes to dumbfuckery like this.

Nothing convinces me to pay full price for a game like the absence of standard multiplayer features...

To the contrary - a bog standard SecuROM CD check >>> forced internet connections.

lol. i've been looking forward to SC2 a great deal, but they just keep hammering the fans. 3 purchases was pretty bad, but i can dig it. blizzard is after all a corporation that needs to make money and this is another way they can do that. the lack of LAN support, while i personally wont miss it terribly, does seem to be setting the stage for a pay-to-play scheme on b.net and that would kill all love i have for blizzard.

I'm sure the modding/hacking/whatever community will create a LAN function. I'm willing to put money there'll be one freely available for download and installation within five days of SC2's release.

Rid of LAN? Don't care for LAN as I have never used it. I am worried that the next "feature" may start charging for B.net use. If that happens I won't buy the game period. That's the reason why i loved SC1 and Diablo 2: Free B.net play. The one reason that keeps me off World of Warcraft is the fact that they charge monthly.
