So has anyone else noticed this?

Charmander- dragon
Cyndaquil- mouse (rat)
Torchick- rooster
Chimchar- monkey
The new fire for B/W (Pokabu)- pig (boar)

All the starter fire types so far have been Chinese zodiac animals. The grass types have been reptiles (I would say dinosaur-ish, but the turtle kind of ruins that... maybe), and the water types have been just... random water animals.

The fire thing is pretty cool though. I wonder if I'm really the first person to notice this, I can't find any other documentation.

I guess if there's ever a Pokemon Octarine version we'll find out if this is really the trend eh?

Interesting, but it's a little...far-fetched :D. Cyndaquil is more of an echidna/shrew than a mouse anyway. Could definitely be a trend, though. Guess we'll have to wait for Pokemon Grey and Brown to know for sure.

That is interesting.

Cyndaquil is called a Fire Mouse.
Though it evolves into a Badger.

A lot of the pokemon have followed a trend, and some pokemon evolutions are takes on mytholigy.

Froslass for example.

I thought so too, but his 'name' in the Pokedex is listed as 'fire mouse'. So, I'm going with that on a technicality.

I like this.

Also..

Articuno
Zapdos
Moltres
I noticed that years ago, and it blew my mind - especially considering I had been playing them for four years before realizing it.

As far as the zodiac animals for fire starters, it's definitely an interesting theory - something I never noticed before. Very cool.

I think you are just looking too far into it, but it's an interesting theory.

Not really. That one guy who theorized that the pokemon anime series is all just ash's mind in a coma did the over analysis.

This thread is awesome.

Another theory (don't know if it's right)...
Could the zodiac animal be a representation of the year they were released?

EDIT:
No.
No they're not.

I've actually heard of the Zodiac theory. It was on the pokemon black or white gamefaqs board, I believe. I prefer to think of Typhosion as a bear, however.

Or the ones who got bored enough to figure out the pokeball catching formula.
