I've recently got enough time to have a little fun with my steam purchases but I came into a problem:

1. I overlooked Amnesia: The Dark Descents', "will probably not work with integrated cards" and it won't run on my computer. Something to do with shader.
2. Super Meat Boy: Another thing goes wrong. Microsoft Visual C++ "Run time error! Program: c:/program files(... This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way. Please contact the application's support team for more information."
a. Is this SMB's problem or is MVC++ need updating or something?
3. Defcon: Won't connect to the server and a lot of other people are/were having the same problem and they just contacted them and it got fixed. Annoying, however.

Just a pain in the butt. I'm not upset or anything and am actively looking for solutions but I just thought it was kinda' sucky and was wondering how much trouble any of you were having and what you did about it or if any of your games just refuse to work. This is not restricted to Steam games.

Bought like... 12 games (most of them were the indie packs). And they all worked fine.
Hope you find a solution to your problem :)

I've got a ridiculous number of Steam games, and I've only had trouble with a few, STALKER being a regular suspect, and most recently, Crysis, appears they ran out of keys but kept selling it.

Crysis was the only game I couldnt fix thru a combination of the Steam Forums and goodle however.

I do agree Steam needs to try a bit harder on its customer service however, if you've got a large number of unhappy customers, it's probably best to issue the refunds. I feel they're perhaps riding on their popularity a bit, hoping the unhappy minority will just not get noticed.

I bought a few games like Mass Effect 1+2 and Fallout 3 only to realise that my graphics card is too poor to play them :/

Oh well, at least I have them for when I get a new laptop.

I have roughly 110 games on my steam account, and currently, only 1 doesn't work: Torchlight. It used to work, then I got a new computer and it does no more. I'll fix it when it becomes an issue.

Any problems I've had with steam were usually resolved by verifying the cache, restarting the computer and/or reinstalling.

Crysis is dodgy regardless of where you get it. Took me ages to get it working on my comp.

The only game that I have not been able to get to work right is Bullet Candy. Something to do with my soundcard messing up the sound. Anyway, they patched it eventually, and it still sucked. Geometry wars/Beat Hazard is WAY better.

Wasn't that, they'd run out of keys and it took them weeks to get some more, leaving some people who could only afford that one game over xmas rather justifiably pissed at Steam for not letting them play it a week after they'd bought it.

I was fine as I picked up a ton of stuff thru the sale, but if I'd only got that, and couldn't play, I'd be pissed too.

*was hoping your quote would be useful, preferably how to get SMB to work*

Really, I'm fucking tired of this. If a person could get a graphics card outside of the body of a laptop, i'd get it. But it doesn't exist in an effective way so I'm stuck with whatever's in the machine. No, I'm not going to go out and get a desktop right now.

Ah, my bad. Didn't realise you were on a laptop. I guess that's just your loss then?

Thats odd... Steam certainly screwed up on that one.

Anyway to get back to OT... All the games I bought have worked.
At least the ones I've played... er..

That is to say bioshock works.

Risen ran out of keys once, but they fixed that within a day or two, so that was good.

I had unending problems with launching steam games until I switched OS...and things seemed to fix themselves instantly.

Are you by any chance on vista?

That Microsoft Visual C++ "Run time error looks pretty familiar to me.

Are you running vista? Because I think that's the error that makes you run the program as an administrator.

If this is the case then I feel rather than seemingly blaming this on steam (I understand this is not your intention however this is how it comes across to me in your original post), you should instead spend a little more time checking the system requirements of games you wish to purchase.

The time 'wasted' on checking these requirements would then later be saved due to you not needing to create a thread about how your games do not work.

Hey I have the same problem with amnesia, I got it to start but whenever i try to play i just get a black screen.
I also got alpha protocol which just barely runs and dead space sees some slow downs when necromorphs get pretty crazy. I also downloaded Polynomial: space of the music and that game is too slow to play as well.
oh well, thats what i get for buying games on a laptop with integrated graphics

The Steam version of Mafia II just glitches out like crazy. I heard it was buggy but the shear number of times I've fallen through the ground into the void is just annoying.

Bought 13 games for the big holiday sale. Every one of them runs just fine. Good hardware + good luck = good gaming.
