I only ever buy DLC off steam, never games, I just dont have the patience to fanny about with the download times and the general annoyance that steam generates within me.

Well, the PC is traditionally home to a large number of great RTS franchises. I'd recommend the Dawn of War series (with the exception of the Soulstorm expansion) if you're into sci-fi.

My best Steam deal was probably the Ghostbusters game, sometime last year. Had a few entertaining hours with it, and paid 3 Euros. :)

I was in the same position as you about three months ago, after getting a new PC.
Personally, the first thing i got was Portal, which is still selling for £6 (ish)
After that, i got the Valve pack when it was on sale. So i've ended up with pretty much every game that Valve ever made (including the just released Portal 2) for £25.
Oh, and i found Fallout 3 Game Of The Year for £6.99

As for recommendations, i'd say Portal and Half Life 2, they look beautiful, they play nice and they're usually pretty cheap.

Team Fortress 2 on Steam - free. Best deal EVER.
This, although anyone who claims TF2 is actually free is deluded.

Free to PLAY sure but to avoid the stigma of being an F2P noob you might as well buy ANYTHING from the store and get your 'premium account'.
And then crates. Crates? Delicious crates that cost £2 a pop to open.

Anyway; recommendations:

Terraria
Recettear
Dungeons of Dreadmor
Torchlight
Deus Ex: Human Revolution
Beat Hazard
Blood Bowl: Legendary Edition
Defense Grid: The Awakening

Just as you did. Borderlands for 5? and Counter Strike Source + Garrys Mod for about same price.

If you're into survival horror games then I recommend Amnesia the Dark Descent. Great atmosphere, easily the scariest game I've played in my life.

The most important question you will ever ask of your pc is "Can it run Crysis?", so get Crysis.

Also, although it's not on steam, if you've got a PC now you can play Minecraft, and you should.
