Escapists, this is actually for my girlfriend I swear. She's pretty big into the whole steampunk genre, but has only recently gotten into gaming, mainly because of me. But she's big into the style of it, gothic clunky clocks and stop watches etc. So heres the question:

Recomendations for story driven games, point and click or adventure, that are funny and steam punk based with characters of whimsy.

Also, it would be easier if they were on PC or Xbox 360, Xbox, PS2, PSX or GB. And if it's on PC to not be too taxing on the system, shes only got a standard Dell. Thank you all kindly.

Whatever, just wash your hands.
syberia kind of had a steam punk feel to it I guess, you can buy them both on gog.com for like 10 bucks each, at least the first one had sort of a steampunk feel, not sure about 2

really the problem is that devs stopped making point and click before steam punk took off so there arnt really many of that type

Does Torchlight playing as an Alchemist with a mech-golem setup count?

I'd go with Wolfram. Machinarium all the way. The puzzles can get a little weird sometimes, but it's full of a sort of whimsical charm and atmosphere. And the art direction and music are second to none.

Machinarium?
I was coming into the thread with this suggestion in mind. Not exactly sure if it is indeed Steampunk, but even if it's not, I definitely recommend it, it's a cute little 4-5 adventure game about a robot kid. Quite fun and a fantastic art style.

A Vampyre's Tale has some gothic in it....I mean it's about vampires. It's funny so that may compensate for the steampunk thing.

Machinarum, The Misadventures of P.B. Winterbottom, Journey to the Center of the Moon / Voyage: Inspired by Jules Verne, Slouching Towards Bedlam and that's about all I got.

I'm concerned that you felt the need to make sure we all knew it was for your girlfriend. Like point and click adventure games and steampunk setting are things to be ashamed of.

How about Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura? It's not point and click but it is one of the best adventure RPGs ever made.

Gog has it for $6.

This

Well, minus the ending, which felt terribly rushed

Also, I agree with the Machinarium posts above

You know, it's been so long I honestly don't remember the ending. I did get it a while ago from gog (thank god because my copy disappeared ages ago) and I've played into it a few hours. I need to seriously sit down and get back into it. I've been too distracted by every new and shiny game that comes along lately.

Oh! I can't believe I forgot the Penny Arcade games! They were both Steampunk and Point and Click-ish.

Beneath A Steel Sky should be good. Maybe she would like Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Father. Both are pretty old school so I can't imagine any PC having problems running them apart from you finding them and getting them running.

The MYST series is all you need, here.

Start with RealMYST (the enhanced version of the original game), then move on to Riven, Myst III: Exile, Myst IV: Revelations, URU: Ages Beyond Myst, and Myst V: End of Ages. They're all worth playing, and all totally different experiences.

Also, all PC games that are not particularly taxing on your system.

-----------

There's also an incredibly obscure game called "The New Adventures of The Time Machine" which was a favourite of mine as a child. Finding a playable copy of it would be a Herculean task these days, though.

-----------

As the user below points out, the Longest Journey games are also somewhat Steampunky. I found them very engaging games, and they have strong female protagonists, so they may appeal to your girlfriend in that regard, too.

I'd maybe look into The Longest Journey, also on GOG at the moment. It's definitely a story driven point and click, with somewhat of a shift between two worlds, one being a modern-ish steampunk (definitely not victorian style, have to mention that).

Sadly I can't say more as I've just picked it up myself and am not far into it yet, but I've heard many a good thing about it.

Longest Journey is definitely a great point and click adventure, though it's not really steampunk. It'll probably satisfy anyone into the alternate universe / alternate technology sort of thing though, as in steampunk fans

It's second on my list of worst endings ever in any form of media, the first being KOTOR 2 and the third being Asimov's "Foundation and Earth"

I think they were forced into a last minute rush (like, for Christmas release or something), because right after the boss fight (and before any plot resolution), it just ends

Beneath a Steel Sky - not steampunk, but science fiction, a bit in the mold of blade runner, though it has humor and stuff in it. It's for free and runs perfectly using ScummVM. A very good game

Machinarium - very cute, somewhat minimalistic game. It's steampunk, but unlike any steampunk scenarios out there, almost all characters are robots. It's got a lovely lovely art style and very good puzzles

Blade Runner - science fiction noir setting, again, it's not steampunk but close enough. Haven't played it myself, but I remember people saying good things about it

Gemini Rue - similar to blade runner in its setting. It's a recently released game, has got a really really good story and okay puzzles.
