I don't know much about Tropico (though now I want to try it...) but I'd highly suggest Advance Wars: Dual Strike (DS). It's got some good depth, very addictive, has wi-fi, easy to understand hard to master, and nice to look at. It might be kind of hard to find though.

I'm going to continue plugging for Impossible Creatures, as shamelessly as I seem to almost always do on here. Find it, buy it, worship it.

It lets you customize your units by mixing and matching body parts from different animals to give them various attributes and abilities. It gives that interesting twist of letting you put your own personal touches on your forces rather than just using the pre-made units of most RTS games.

So you don't like turn based? I'm surprised you liked halo wars, the gameplay was very clunky and involved very little actual strategy.

Give Company of Heroes a try, was a brilliant game. The first Dawn of War is also a pretty solid choice (though the second one was a pretty major let down). Definately play some Total annihilation, classic game. Also the older command and conquer games from westwood. Petrologlyph make some interesting games, so you may want to check those out as well.

I thought that supreme commander is a great strategy game. BUT only if you are playing with someone who doesn't rush. I stopped playing that game over the internet because people would just rush and rush every game. It gets to be really annoying.

Total War is good for what you say you like, but that impossible Creatures has something in it too

Supreme Commander. I have enjoyed no other RTS since, seriously...

It just did too many things right: Interface, Scale, Unit diversity, Balance

When I first saw Starcraft 2 gameplay it made me physically ill to think a company with Blizzard's money and that much development time the game couldn't at least match SupCom's features.

Surprisingly I didn't like Sins of a Solar Empire. IMO space combat shouldn't involve parking your ships to fire.

The original C&C is great, I still can hear the voice when you build something.

Also I love AOEII.

Empire at war gets an honorable mention, the game's great until you have to do a ground battle, then it's just a bit of a mess. Not too fun. The space battles are kickass though

Haegemonia: Legions of Iron (plugged for the hundredth time), excellent game, scale, full 3D (space RTS, like homeworld, but good) and very pretty, even by today's standards.

Rise of Nations, I can't explain why, but it is one of my favourite RTS's of all time, the difference automated guns makes against armies with out any is devastating.

Warzone 2100, old school game, get it on open source, and play away!

Oh and once again reinforcing Dawn Of War, excellent game.

I'll probably get flamed for this, because it's sort of an RPG hyrid, but I quite enjoyed Valkyria Chronicles.

Red Alert 3 - Awesome game, don't be put off by the marketing style ie Big boobs and short skirts.
Heroes of Might and MAgic V - It's kinda significantly different to number 4, although I thought 4 was better so you might not like this one.

Warcraft 3 ruled but bored of now tbh after years of use.

DOW i did not get into, but can try again as i did not give it a chance really.

ROME TOTAL WAR played enjoyed looking for less conflict more politics really.

I do like turn-based actually i have the entire fallout series, which fking rulez.

Command and conquer 3 sucked fking ballz guy's, the earlier installments we're decent though.

Supreme Commander looked pretty fking good to be honest just had a quick look, thanks for the help guys if there's anything else you can think of much appreciated.
