FEBRUARY 17--A 14-year-old Wisconsin girl who refused to stop texting during a high school math class was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct, according to police. The teenager was busted last Wednesday at Wauwatosa East High School after she ignored a teacher's demand that she cease texting. The girl, whose name we have redacted from the below Wauwatosa Police Department report, initially denied having a phone when confronted by a school security officer. However, the phone was located after the girl was frisked by a female cop. The Samsung Cricket, the police report noted, was recovered "from the buttocks area" of the teenager. The student was issued a criminal citation for disorderly conduct, which carried "a bail of $298," and had her phone confiscated. The girl, who was barred from school property for a week, is scheduled for an April 20 court appearance on the misdemeanor rap. (4 pages)
0_o!!! Holy shit! WTF is going on here? This shit is serious and no joke. I think I would sue or some shit if I was the parents. This to me is pretty outrageous. I can understand her being busted at school, but a misdemeanor? I would at the very least get a very good lawyer and ream them in court.

Well, she hardly deserved being arrested or charged with a crime, but at the same time, obey your goddamned teacher you little skank *****! WTF is with all these misbehaving little shits? Has parenting gone so far down the drain that this is what children have become?

Aaaaaaand this is what happens when any and all power is taken away from teachers. She was asked to stop texting, but she kept going.

EDIT: Not saying that an arrest isn't going a bit overboard, however.

Like I said, suspend her. Giving her a misdemeanor charge? That is not reasonable.

Well ...

This does seem incredibly too much, I could understand the girl getting sent to the principle's office, but getting ordered with a criminal citation seems way too much. I can understand why teachers would hate cell phones (allows the student to text to friends, play games, etc.) basically do other things than pay attention in class. Which in reality is not helping the teen out ... but still, being criminally charged? Wow that's just too much in my opinion. This should be dropped pretty quick.

Must have caught me while I was editing. And in all honesty, suspension isn't the punishment it used to be. I have to side mit Hunde Des Krieg here.

No you shouldn't be texting during class but damn really???? When I was in school they would confiscate your phone for the year. I don't think the cops should have been involved this is a matter that the school could have easily taken care of on their own.

Problem is it isn't entirely the parent's fault. Sure they bought this girl the phone, but really, what teenager doesn't have a phone (something that is sort of sad, I didn't have a cell phone until I was 16, but oh well they're everywhere). The parents aren't in class with the girl to tell her to stop texting and pay attention. This is a byproduct of our ever increasing "cell" world, unfortunately this will happen more and more. Especially since young people with phones think it's important to text everything that happens to them at all times.

I'm not sure how this will get fixed, it will only get worse in my opinion unless the parents don't give the teen their cell phone until they earn it, which I am all for.

Yes, I can just imagine the line of questioning this might bring about...

"Who were you texting missy?"
"My boyfriend"
"And then you hid your mobile pho...*ahem*...no further questions"

On a serious note...WTF! this just wouldn't happen if the teachers were allowed to hit kids again.

She should know better because her parents should have instilled the sense that such an act is innapropriat and rude. I'm not saying they should be there, but parents just don't seem to set boundaries anymore, they just let their kids have free reign over everything

Well, ok. I will agree with you, but at the same time, do you really thing everything a parent tells a child, that child will heed and obey? No, they will not. Unfortunately they seem to think texting their "peeps" (my younger brother said it not me) is more important than learning, and I must respectively disagree.

My age demographic pisses me off. Why is it so hard to just wait until you're between classes?! But on the other hand, a criminal charge is way out of line.

Now if anyone would just enforce the "no cell phones while driving" laws...

I don't care how good you think you are... you aren't! My life is at risk when you drive irresponsibly and that is NOT acceptable. I really wish traffic laws were actually enforced at all. I can't tell you how many people I see run red lights DAILY. This isn't a once in a while thing... maybe this is just my area though.

Sorry, that was a bit OT...

On topic: Yeah... kids today... and stuff. I'm definitely conflicted on this. Yes, it can be seen as going overboard. On the other hand, she WAS creating a disruption and she WAS told to stop multiple times. And I know this is bad reasoning and completely unfair, but sometimes you DO just have to make an example out of someone. And when it comes to cell phone use in our modern society, I think a lot of this is past due.

A man (or woman) after my own heart (or [blank]).
It makes me feel forty years old to say it, but really... kids these days.

If she's quiet about it...
And doesn't disrupt the class...
And was talking to her mom about her dying cousin or something...

Then I'd be okay with it.

Otherwise, LOLOLOLOLOLOL PUT THE SHIT AWAY AND PAY ATTENTION.
