So tonight marked the 7th night in a row I stayed in my university's library until it closes (1am), and I'm probably going to be there tomorrow and the next day as well. I've been cursed to write over 30 essays for med school apps, and they need to be done asap. Well since I've missed last weekend and probably going to be missing this one as well, my two separate friends (with the same *cough* easier majors) brought up a huge question I got to thinking.

Is it better (not responsible or whatever) to skip having the most fun at university (I say most because yeah I still have fun) and have it pay off huge with good grades, or make more and more time for having fun because this is the only time in my life I will spend here in this moment.

I'm also in my final year. So six more years of med school after this

Gotta try and balance it out. Studying and getting good grades are important, but blowing off steam and getting to party is just as important. I mean its college, have some fun while you are at it.

Study as much as possible to get through the week and when you get some free time find something fun to do. Can't to do much of either.

Ehh, its probably a good idea to balance it out.

Not partying during college is when you are really missing out (from what I've heard).

Since its coming to an end, I'd focus a little bit more on the educations.

I'm not the partying type...never have been. Way too introverted for that.

But that doesn't mean I default to choosing "studying". Quite the contrary. My choice becomes "study or play video games?" and the 16 hours I've spent playing Patrician 4 over the past week should tell you all you need to know. Not that I'm too worried about it...my GPA is going to probably land between 3.4 and 3.6 this semester as I finish the upper division business core, aka "shit I totally suck donkey balls at but I have to take to graduate", so I'm doing just fine. Starting next semester it's going to be all accounting, all the time, and I expect to pull between 3.9 and 4.0 in those classes while still playing video games like a high school kid with too much free time and/or working part time in an accounting office.

I partied for 2 years and ended up bailing on my course. I suppose party is the wrong word, I didn't go out any more than anyone else it's just whatever I was doing I wasn't studying.

Not any more, I've done that, it sucks and I felt terrible for having blown a major direction in my life because I didn't focus. I've started again and I'm loving being on time with assignments and feeling competent in class. I still hang out with my friends but school comes first and I rarely drink heavily any more.

I feel good, I want to have good grades. I already have friends I couldn't give less of a shit about the social aspect of school any more. I want a good job and money at some point.

I endorse this practice fully.
IMO, the entire point of college beyond the accumulation of knowledge (or whatever) is learning how to balance both of these goals equally.
Do what you gotta do to succeed, but do what's necessary to keep yourself happy, as well. When both goals are in sync, you win!

Study! When you can afford to coat your car in solid gold, you will then see who is laughing!

In all seriousnes, all work and no play make johnny a dull dull boy. Balance it out.

I partied a lot in my first year at university and it caused a whole lot of problems, including having to go to court and almost being kicked out of the school. But from then on I focused on academics and it really paid off. Honestly I wish I could redo my freshman year and focus more on school.

In response to your question, there will always be parties later on. So don't waste time partying when you could be getting a headstart on your career.

I still say "party" is not a verb. But I digress.
I would think you would be much more likely to regret not doing well in school later in life than not going to enough parties. Besides, spending the majority of your time in college avoiding classwork is kind of a waste of your time and your/your parents'/the government's money, isn't it?
Then again, I'm an asocial old fart who didn't get invited to those sorts of parties.
