The worse gimmick I can think of is the promise of sex or sex appeal. It's sad, really, since it shows that the developers have to resort to the lowest possible human emotion, horniness, in order to sell their game. It's even worse when an entire series runs on sex appeal (*coughtombraidercough*)

Tomb Raider? Really?

I thought that was great for its platforming and fun. Not sex appeal.

Bayonetta on the other hand...

Bayonetta couldn't have been any less subtle unless SEX flashed onto the screen every time you hit something.

No, you want gimmicky sex appeal, you go to the mother of all gimmicky sex appeal games, BMX XXX. A game so bad Dave Mirra refused to have his name attached so they had to find some way to sell it. Boobies.

And yeah, sex in a game just to sell it is a horrible gimmick. It gives games such a bad rep. Annoyingly so.

Doesn't it?

When I first saw the topic, I instantly thought 3D, and motion controls. I can't believe I forgot sex appeal. Thank you for opening my eyes.

I wouldn't pick Tomb Raider for blatant sex appeal.

Try Rumble Roses or the Guy Game or DOA Xtreme beach volleyball.

And the afformentioned Bayonetta.

Tomb Raider was actually more about platforming, the fact that the lead character happens to be a well endowed woman is coincedence.

Bayonetta is actually really fun. There's nothing wrong with a character that is appealing to the eyes.

Too true... and I really didn't find her attractive.

Maybe it's because I HATE Tomb Raider games for their controls. I also tend to nitpick the logic of how a stacked chick like Laura could do handstands on ledges, let alone move without snapping her spine.

I've never played Tomb Raider, but from what I've heard isn't it the epitome of sex-appeal bullshit? Scantily clad busty female killer? Box art that can't resist cutting off the face?

Regardless, I'll go with the popular choices of 3d and motion-control gaming. Call me a conformist, but it really just falls squarely into the topic at hand.

Interestingly, since Japan has actual Hentai games, as well as dating games, sex and sex appeal doesn't make its way into other games. Blame prudish western sensibilities.

That'd be a better *cough* comment if it were true.

OT: Motion controls. Just... Argh.

Heh heh! Well, when you put it like that, I guess it should get a pass.

I suppose I shouldn't complain, I mean, we do need more girls in games, right?

I've noticed that MMORPGs are far better at advertising sex appeal than Bayonetta.

The interviewers are on their way right now for your help making bayonetta 2.

Claiming its a wow/cod/halo slayer for the sake of a pre emptive boast. Way to count your chicks before they hatch. Or before you even receive the eggs.
