I came across this situation today and wondered how others would handle it.

My mate is quite a bad stutterer (actual word?) and he told me today he hates it when other people finish his sentences for him.

So, (If you stutter) do you hate it when people finish your sentences?

For people who don't stutter: do you finish a stutterer's sentence for them?

lol, I'll only do that to people I know and who can take it. I know it's harsh but it's funny.

Anyone remember that scene from waterworld (I think?) where Dennis Hopper was going to let some one live if they could count to three without stuttering?... He failed... That was harsh...but funny

I stutter every once in a while and I can definately see how it would be incredibly annoying to have your sentences finished by other people. At the same time though I finish peoples sentences even when they don't stutter so I'm a guilty mother fucker. :-(

P.S. stutterer is an actual word you get an A in spelling today. :)

Stuttering is something that is actually quite common in my family, so I think I've gotten used to people finishing my sentences for me or me finishing someone else's sentence. It doesn't bother me at all.

One of my friends stutters really badly, I don't finish sentences for him unless we are in a hurry. Funnily enough, he doesn't stutter whenever we are in a hurry.

Most people I talk to (most people in general actually) are very slow thinkers and take forever to say things anyway, so stuttering doesn't bother me any more than normal people bother me.

I know one person who stutters very badly, and I don't finish his sentences for him, not only because I think it would be rude, but also because I would most likely guess wrong, and also I have to hear his whole sentence to figure out what he is trying to say anyways, most of the time.

That happens in Pans Labyrinth, and it really wasn't funny in the slightest.

One thing that I hate is when a movie makes a certain person more innocent by giving them a stutter, it's similar to the whole "Aww, he's retarded" thing that you see a lot of. I myself don't stutter (oftin) yet I still find it offensive.

I don't know anyone who stutters, but if I did, I'd try to let them finish their sentences. Though if I knew them really well, it's likely I would start finishing their sentences. I do that to everyone I know really well, so it wouldn't be due to their stuttering.

Ah that's the one... That guy was brutal and your right that wasn't funny.

Dennis Hopper's character in waterworld was funny and it sounded like the kinda thing he'd do.

Unfortunately most people see stuttering as a kind of nervousness. I don't think it's always meant to imply retardedness. Its' just a ploy to engage your sympathy.

There's a character in Pearl Harbour whose defining feature is his stutter. I do find that annoying but I find it hard to believe it's offensive when used in a sympathetic way.

Haha. My old boss used to terrorize the new trainees with something like that, only it made them stutter more so he'd tear them to pieces in front of everyone. Good times...

I would not finish a stutterer's sentence, although I would be incredibly tempted to end it in as dirty a way as possible. Only to a friend of course, not a stranger. That would be weird.
