Hello all, i have been a hardcore gamer since i was a young child, playing commander keen and lemmings, pong and every sonic and mario game. But once i found PC games, i haven't looked back. My all time favorite PC games are Deus Ex, Half Life series and Skyrim/fallout 3.

So here i am, looking for a game that be anywhere close to Deus Ex.

The greatest thing about Deus ex was the ability the game gave you to handle situations how you wanted to. You could play through the game so many different ways.. you could focus on hand guns (my favorite was the pistol with the laser site and upgraded accuracy and steady), or use heavy weapons like RPG's or shotguns, or maybe not kill at all and use non lethal weapons like mace, battons or stun guns. Also you could talk your way out of certain situations and the things you say and do will effect the story line of the game. And ontop of that, you could play the game using stealth techniques or go rambo style.

A lot of people suggested mass effect and that game is just.. not the same. Deus ex 2 was crippled do to the expansion to consoles and i was highly disappointed.

Are there any other games really close to deus ex, a FPS adventure/rpg game where you could upgrade your weapons and play levels free style? I absolutely hate linear games.. there is just nothing to them. Anyone know what i'm talking about and have any suggestions? The closest game i have found is fallout and skyrim, but there is just something lacking about them.

Definitely check out Dishonored if you haven't. There aren't a TON of weapons and skills (especially in straight up fights), but you have loads of creative options for getting around objectives and combining skills in fun ways. Maps cater to a lot of different playstyles and different skills being used in getting to where you need to go.

And you can definitely do stealth or rambo style (or mixtures of the two). The game world will actually begin to reflect your playstyle in small ways. If you don't care about casualties, you feed right into the plague that's gripping the city... and bad things happen...

Uh... Deus Ex: Human Revolution? Admittedly it heavily favors non-lethal stealth runs, but you still can play it like a normal shooter.

Seconding Dishonored, too. Again, it heavily favors stealth, but it gives many more options for moving about the world than DE: HR does at first glance.

Other than that, I don't really think I know many games that offer the same level of freedom of progression. Far Cry 3, maybe, though the story is pretty inconsequential.

Dishonored, while conventional things just click with it to make it awesome. I really enjoyed it and am just about to finish it.

Ah, the immersive sim. There just aren't enjoy of them, are there?

Vampire: The Masquerade Bloodlines is easily one of the best designed First Person RPGs ever made. If you enjoyed the open nature of Deus Ex, you'll fall in love with this one - it's easily on par, though it does come apart at the end unfortunately. Be sure to apply the latest version of the fan-made patch though; the game was a horrible mess at launch.

System Shock 2 was the precursor to Deus Ex, and shares more than a little of it's DNA. It's available now on GOG.com. Be sure to apply the necessary graphics mods to update it's terribly aged visuals.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution is a terrific prequel. It's not quite as good as Deus Ex, but it's an incredible game in it's own right and nearly - nearly - makes up for Invisible War. Give it a whirl.

That's about it really. There just aren't that many of this type of game that truly offer the open freedom of Deus Ex, without entering the Open World territory of Fallout and it's kin.

I guess my suggestion would be Hitman : Blood Money ... it has all the elements your looking for except for the expansive free roaming. But you can approach every problem differently. Otherwise the most common choices have already been covered.

Stalker is a non-linear FPS RPG. It's not particularly accessible, but most people who get past its learning curve love it.

Metro 2033 is highly linear, but similar in a fair few respects and is worth a playthrough just because it's really something else. If you want a FPS that can match Half-Life, it's your best bet.

Ya Human Revolution is a decent attempt, just expect the standard modern casualisations.
And next to other things people suggested you should try the old Hitman games, they have a very neat multi-approach setup to every mission, and if you play the new one again expect the standard casual stuff.

For non-linearity nothing really beats the first two Thief games. They don't really have much RPG elements but feels similar to Deus Ex in terms of level design.

Edit: Oh yeah Hitman is a good suggestion too, especially Blood Money.

Well, the problem with that is that Deus Ex was kind of a one-of-a-kind game. Warren Spector said that he regrets listening to the market research teams when he made Invisible War, as they are the ones who wanted a clean-cut hero wearing a purple jumpsuit. No joke.

System Shock 1 and 2, Thief the Dark Project, are both great games that Spector had a hand in, and tend to be rather open. As for the plot of Deus Ex and its diverse gameplay, Spector has said his primary influence is Suikoden I and Suikoden II from Konami. He said it kinda opened his eyes as to what was possible with political and philosophical storytelling in games, though, they do not have the same level if openness that Deus Ex does.

I'm going to have to jump on the Vampire the Masquerade bandwagon.

Absolutely brilliant RPG, came out on the same day as Half Life 2.

Needs the fan patch to actually function, but after that it should be smooth sailing.

Defintely in my top 10 favourite games ever.

I would also recommend Alpha Protocol, but the AI is too buggy to allow for pacifism and stealth. Maybe there's a mod on PC to improve it that I don't know about.
Having literally just finished a pacifist stealth run yesterday on an unmodded PC version (without pistols to boot), how do you mean? There are sections where you're forced to fight, but that's just the way the world works and you don't get punished for fighting it out in those segments.

If anything, the game is a little overpowered in regards to stealth. The best abilities and weapons are all in the stealth category, and if you fully level up you can pretty much breeze through bosses and levels.

It is an RPG, so levelling is important, the cross hair is a bit misleading for example, because it's the same system as Deus Ex, where the bullet can land anywhere in the circle and you need to wait/stack up levels, to make that circle small enough to guarantee a hit.

Alpha Protocol is probably a good recommendation anyway, stealth and combat playthroughs are viable, it's got a similar spy setting and the amount of flexibility in whose dead/whose alive/who hates you/whose your ally is pretty incredible.

I've never bothered installing the fan patch in my eight or so playthroughs, and I don't find this to be true. The game is unpolished in a lot of ways, and apparently the unofficial patch does improve a lot, but the version currently on Steam works fine.

Freeware indie title Iji basically gives you all the non-linear decision making of Deus Ex in a 2D action platformer. Graphics are kinda crummy, but its a brilliant few hours of fun.

Also on the 2D side of things, Mark of the Ninja from last year takes a handful of the freeform gameplay and upgrade-based levelgating attributes of Deus Ex. It's fundamnetally rather different, being a stealth game and all, but it may scratch a few of the same itches.

The fundamental problem with games like Deus Ex is that they are a risky sell to publishers. On the indie side of things, you'll definitely find more games that take the gameplay elements you enjoy. The catch is that most are crippled down to 2D due to budget constraints.

Anecdotal evidence is the best kind of evidence.

The game is buggy as hell without the fan patches, just because your copy behaved, doesn't mean that others had as fortunate an experience.

Plus, the patch restores a lot of cut content.

Hey, just offering my experience. Plus, I did say that it seemed like the patch improved the game.

Hey guys thanks for all the great replies! I should have stated that i tried Deus Ex:HR and i thought it was just OKAY. I really got into it at first, but it's just not the same as the original. It just drives me crazy that there aren't that many open ended games like this, almost all FPS are so linear and predictable that they just bore me to death.

Vampire: Masquerade - i loved that game, and i was hoping more games like this came out. Like i said, i loved the Half life 1/2 engine and wished more RPG's would have used that engine. Fun game for sure.

Stalker - just saw some gameplay of it, looks awesome! Can't wait to try this..

Hitman - Haven't played this series since the first one, maybe too much stealth for me but if i see it onsale i will buy it, thanks!

System Shock - Yes, now we are talking. Can't believe i never played this.

Alpha and disohored just look too linear, or i dont know, just don't like the way they play.
