I really like comic books, but I don't think superhero comics, specifically those based in the Marvel and DC universes, are really my thing. What are some good comics that are not superhero comics? So far I've read pretty much all of Fables and Jack of Fables, a cool one I found called The Unwritten, and about half of Sandman (since it's pretty disconnected from the DC universe). I plan to read Watchmen, although I haven't yet.

I'd also like to say that I don't have anything against superhero comics, I just don't think that they're a good fit for me personally.

Thanks for the Help!

I've read those, but didn't mention them because I think of them more like manga, even though they're technically western. Thanks though.

Well, the Walking Dead is pretty amazing.

And may I ask if the thing that turns you off to DC and Marvel is the continuity? Because I hear a lot of people say it, and it's something that used to scare me too. But it's like learning to swim, all you really have to do is jump into the deep end of the pool, and your need to survive will do the rest. Hell, I've found that the continuity is one of the best parts, the DCU (which is what I read from) is the biggest single continuous story ever written (possible exceptions for the Marvel universe, I don't know which is bigger). Once you jump in, you find it all but impossible not to be tantalized by the unbelievably huge back story. Just a thought.

Ah, well, I tried. :p

But, sadly those are the only non-superhero comics I know.

I Am Legend is supposed to be very good and actually very different from the movie from what I've heard.

If you're interested in webcomics at all, I'd say give Dr McNinja a try. Not a superhero in the strictest sense, although he does work for good. I'd also recommend Questionable Content, which I'm not sure how to describe... kind of like Friends, but with more indie references. Also Rival Angels is an interesting read. Focus on the lives of 4 rookies in women's professional wrestling.

And if you're not interested in webcomics, then that is about all I have for you.

Wormwood, Gentleman Corpse. Not for the squeamish, but it is a helluva ride.

The Dresden Files: Storm Front is out in comic form now too, and the book is good.

Johnny The Homicidal Maniac and spinoffs. Always good for a laugh. If I ever have a kid, they will be raised on "Everything Can Be Beaten".

You should go read it. It is a brick, but one of the best comics ever made.
Also, this. I picked it up because it was so big, compared to the other comics, not expecting to like it as much as I did.

DMZ.... modern American civil war - great stuff
Y the Last Man ... although your mileage may vary
100 Bullets
The Losers ... 80s action film of comics

Hellblazer ... There's very little super or hero about John Constantine but start at the beginning with the trade paperbacks and you won't be disappointed.

While I haven't actually read any of it (I cant seem to find it anywhere) "Last Man Standing" looks pretty cool.

If you've read Sandman you might like Lucifer it's spin-off (I personally like it more, shock horror). Northlanders is good, short and long stories about Vikings by Brian Wood who also writes DMZ. Pride of Baghdad and Y the Last Man by Brian K Vaughan.

Also off the top of my head some of these might interest you:
Trasnmetropolitan
The Invisibles
Preacher
Joe The Barbarian
Sweet Tooth
Chew
Atomic Robo
The Walking Dead

Edit:
PUNISHER MAX - definitely, the best story ever written (my oppinion) by Garth Ennis, set in a universe where there's no superheroes and Frank Castle is hitting his 70s and still fighting his fight against crime.

Cool, already lots of good suggestions. I really like, I've seen the walking dead at the book store, but I think I'll give it a try. A number of these I'm more or less familiar with from searching TV tropes and looking through the bookstore, but I don't think I've ever heard of Bone, and it looks pretty interesting. I'll have to check it out. Also, I've had my eye on Hellblazer, so I might check that out as well. Also, are the Dresden files books good? I've heard a good amount of references to them, and I might check them out.

I won't deny, the continuity is a part of it, It's fairly daunting, but there are a couple of other reasons why I don't feel Marvel and DC superhero comics are right for me. One of the biggest is that if I started to get into a universe as expansive as these I'd want to know everything about the universe. while this would most certainly be possible, it would take a very long time and a lot of money, which I can't spare at the moment. Another big thing is that, from what I understand, books featuring the same characters are often written by different people (I'm not sure about this, tell me if I'm wrong). This is somewhat of a pet peeve of mine, as it would only take one crappy writer to completely ruin a character that I've grown to care about. I think the last thing is the knowledge that the big series are unlikely to ever end. But who knows, maybe someday I'll get into it, especially taking into account DC's upcoming reboot.

I love webcomics, and even though I've heard of most of those I've never read them. I'll be sure to check them out.
