Monster - 74 Episodes of awesome. Its what someone recommended me years ago after I watched Deathnote, and I loved it 10X more.

Very very quick/loose description

Its about a surgeon who saves a child instead of a politician for hospital prestige. The kid turns out to be one of the worst serial killers in history. Also lots of other stuff.

Ah now that is a challenge. I would suggest a head fucky anime like FLCL or Akira, but the methaphors and such are so buried within the wackiness you would need a drill made of diamonds just to get to them.

So yeah,I'm not exactly the best source of smart, deep anime/manga but somebody else here on The Escapist probably is.

The only thing I can think of is Code Geass. Amazing anime, it's got lots of action, but it also focuses on strategy and planning and intelligence too. It's a little more action focused than death note, but the two are kinda in the same vein. The action sequences are sci-fi mech battles, but they actually tend to focus on battlefield tactics as opposed to just the combat. The one notable exception being whenever the Lancelot and the Guren face off.

BTW, the ending is absolutely mind-blowing amazing. it's got 2 25/26 episode seasons, so it's pretty short too. If you like it, you might want to try FMA, although that's another step towards action, it still has some pretty deep meanings and thought behind it.

Bartender, Medaka Box, Black Lagoon, Jing King of Bandits, Petshop of Horrors and xxxHolic (and supplement that with Tsubasa reservoir chronicle or you'll get lost on what happens later).

FLCL is deep when you really think about it, but have to watch it three or four times to get the full meaning. Otherwise it just seems random.

Well that kinda ends the thread. Nothing really beats Monster in serious deep tone.

I would say Haibane Renmei and Serial Experiments Lain are fairly serious/deep and worth watching. But yea Monster is in a league of its own.

Incidentally Monster is my favorite anime with Serial Experiments Lain and Haibane Renmei in my top 10. I like me some serious anime.

Ghost in the Shell - By far the best sci-fi anime I've ever seen. Should definitely fit the bill.

I would recommend starting with Ghost in the Shell (the Mamoru Oshii movie) from '95. Don't get the "2.0" version, as it has shitty CGI and smoothing. Also, make sure you watch it subbed. I'm not a purist, but the dub here is awful by modern standards. Follow that up with the first season of the TV anime Stand Alone Complex. The rest (Innocence, 2nd GIG) is optional and not really worth it.

[sub]Death Note was only slightly above average anyway. You people are weird sometimes.[/sub]

- Legend of the Galactic Heroes: Yeah, with a name like that, you'd think it was some bad 80s shounen fighting show, but no, it's actually an incredible - albeit really long - space opera with lots of characters, politics, strategy, and philosophy. Unfortunately, most studios consider such a long and long winded anime to be unmarketable to American anime fans, so you're pretty much stuck watching it fansubbed on youtube.

- Ghost in the Shell: Let's face it, very few directors can get away with having the main character naked a good third of the time and still be really smart, but Mamoru Oshii is one of them. Then again, most anime fans have already seen it.

- Akira: A drama, wrapped in an allegory, wrapped in a social commentary, wrapped in plastic explosives. Again though, it's kind of anime canon.

That's all that comes to mind right now, but this seems like a good place to start. I'm actually tempted to add Neon Genesis Evangelion to the list, but the thing is, even though the characters are some of the smartest written in any television show or movie I've ever seen, and even though it does actually have a lot to say about the human condition, it's not deep for any of the reasons people seem to think it is. All of the genuinely interesting things it has to say are wrapped up in a metric shit-ton of bullshit pomo existentialism, bullshit pop psychology, and easily misleading imagery. While all that does give NGE a cool atmosphere, it has the same problem as 2001 A Space Odyssey, where it doesn't so much provoke thought as it makes the audience go "ooh, this is so deep." Still, for the character drama alone I'd recommend it, and like I said, beneath all the BS, there actually is some pretty deep stuff, so give it a shot. You might love it, or you might hate it, but after all, how can I fail to recommend my favorite anime?

I'd recommend these as more or less fitting the bill:
Monster [http://www.themanime.org/viewreview.php?id=969]
Spice & Wolf [http://www.themanime.org/viewreview.php?id=1055]
Kara no Kyoukai - The Garden of Sinners [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.304952-TYPE-MOON-Review-Anniversary-Kara-no-Kyoukai]
Grave of the Fireflies [http://www.themanime.org/viewreview.php?id=110]
Steins;Gate (on-going) [http://littleredreviewer.wordpress.com/2011/06/17/anime-review-steinsgate/]
Puella Magi Madoka Magica [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.275533-Puella-Magi-Madoka-Magica-Review]

I'm not sure how "deep" I'd say Death Note was though. It did have an elaborately laid out plot, with enough outmanoeuvring and masterminding going on to make it interesting (particularly the first 2/3rds or it). But it's more of an exciting battle of wits action series than anything to really reflect on (aside from being a pretty sharply drawn up contest between utilitarianism and deontological ethics, which is sort of ruined by Light going full-on evil very early on though).

its not exactly anime, but avatar: the last airbender was a farely deep show with social commentary, a fair bit of humor, and awesome fight scenes, what more could you want?

Texhnolyze - you need the right set of mind to enjoy it, though, as it's very slow and a little confusing in the beginning. But it gets really good later on.

Yes, I concur, same case here. Also, if you want true deep meaning that reaches the core of Japanese symbolism - Aoi Bungaku series. Especially the first - Ningen Shikkaku (No Longer Human). Mind blowing...

It's only about 12 eps, and features several stories, ang they are(in no particular order):

No Longer Human
Kokoro (heart)
The Spider's Thread
Hell Screen
Run, Melos!
In the Forest, Under Cherries in Full Bloom

EDIT: Ah, and how can I forget - Elfen Lied. However, it's rather... graphic, if I may express myself thusly. The story is heart-achingly brutal, but then again, if you truly want meaning and depth, then you should embrace it, and look past the brutality of it all.
