It's not the newest game, it's from 2002, but it's by far my favourite RPG ever made.

Neverwinter Nights by Bioware.

It's a strictly D&D based RPG, but it has a fantastic story, great gameplay and is just great!
I seriously recommend it.
Heck, I even got my girlfriend hooked on it, and she doesn't really like games, unless they are old Nintendo games it seems or involve rescuing a princess, which this game certainly isn't.

I'd stay away from Neverwinter Nights 2 though, that game is pretty bad. But then again, that was made by Obsidian, and we all know how badly they can cock up a good game.

If you like Oblivion, you'll DEFINITELY love MW. Just don't cry to everyone about the combat system. It works, get over it.
I just don't understand how I can be standing right in front of a stationary target and still miss.
Low Agility? Low skill with the weapon?

It's more logical to have skill reflect hit rate, rather than just damage. How does knowing more about the Terrible Shotgun make it kill better, again?

Eternal Freaking Sonata. Sure it's so freaking linear and a JRPG, but it's beautiful, the score is one of the best ever, and the plot is one cherish in my heart.

Also, Morrowind is quite excellent and Baldur's Gate and Diablo are good. Also, Tales of Symphonia on Gamecube can be played on the Wii if you have one, and Tales of Vesperia is on 360, so check it out.

The wait till Dragon Age 2 is really starting to get long and I recently played and beat Fable 3 which was very enjoyable and funny at some points.

Now Im back to playing Mass Effect 2 to try all possible combinations of characters I can imagine, such as Evil girl, etc.

But are there any other RPGs out there I have yet to discover and love? Are there any recent releases?

Heres the list of all RPGS I own or have played:
-Dragon Age series(Awesome)
-Fallout series (Wicked cool)
-KOTOR 1(Loved back in the day)
-Bioshock?
-Warcraft(Meh)
-Mass Effect series(Awesome)
-Fable series(Pretty cool)
-Elder Scrolls Oblivion(As big as warcraft in console form)

So recommend me a RPG I might discover and love based on my top experiences. Im willing to try anything here so give me a holler.
Vampire the Masquerade Bloodlines, System Shock 2, Deus Ex (didn't like it, but it's a true RPG), and maybe STALKER, but it's more as a FPS. Overall I prefer SS2 and VtMB.

This. Ten this. Fantastic game.

I also suggest Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura. Just... patch it first. Big time.

The Paper Mario Series and the Mario and Luigi Series are some of the best RPGs around. Good gameplay with great stories with hilarious dialogue. I'm sad nobody gives it the praise it deserves in these kinds of threads. Sure, they might not be as serious and gritty as every other game on the market, but they are great games.

Well, if you can play PS2 games, and you don't mind JRPGs, then I've got a fantastic game in mind.

Persona 4 is, without question, one of my FAVORITE rpgs of all time. Seriously, look up a review of it, and check it out. Any description I could make of it would be doing it a disservice.

Here's a brief review:

Morrowind.

Oblivion is the blond sorority sister action-RPG of the TES family and Morrowind is her dark, "alternative" action-RPG sister.

Despite all the controversy, if you can find a copy of that Morrowind 2011 mod and the instructions and if your computer has the chops to handle it, the game is considerably less of an eyesore.

But even in its hideous original form, it's still probably my favourite game ever made. Brilliant setting, great story, plenty of interesting characters, and some of the best story I've yet encountered. The combat is meh even compared to Oblivion, though I've found that setting the difficulty to 100 tends to make for a more satisfying experience.

Edit: Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines is also a beautiful, brilliant game, and, though less innovative and far more linear than Morrowind, it has some definite variety in how you can choose to take on most missions. Downside: you need to patch it to get it to run AT ALL on most newer computers (only Steam game I've ever bought that flat-out doesn't run without serious modification). Google around for the Gold Edition patch -- huge file, but consists of nothing but bugfixes.

I bought Persona 4 on New Years Eve and never looked back. One of the most addictive RPG's I've played since Mass Effect 2 came out. It's more of a traditional RPG with turn-based combat, and has a bunch of extremely well developed main characters.

Because you've just run about 3 kilometres without any walking or stopping and are now tired as fuck and unable to swing properly. Also, they didn't incorporate dodge animations xD

Alpha Protocol is well worth a look. It got bashed by reviewers for its poor shooting/cover taking mechanics, but in reality, Alpha Protocol's shooting/cover taking mechanics are better than the first Mass Effect's. The problem is it doesn't have such a captivating universe or amazing graphics, so the less than stellar gameplay isn't as forgiveable.

But, that said, if you could slog through Mass Effect 1 and forgive its awful combat, chances are you'll be fine with Alpha Protocol and you'll find an interesting (if convoluted) story and some pretty fun & memorable characters.

I've been playing Persona 3 Portable for a while and I'd definitely suggest buying it. It's a very stylish game, and it's fairly nonlinear, especially for a JRPG. The characters are decent and the whole game is pretty zany. The only thing that's a constant chore is the boss fights, that require you to whore out their weakness.

It is when talking about traditional JRPGs. I found Demon's Souls to be more enjoyable, although it doesn't feel like a JRPG in the least.
I'd suggest Lost Odyssey too if you can get past the random battles and turn based combat. The Thousand Years of Dreams sequences are quite possibly the best examples of video game writing I've ever experienced.

You are in desperate need of some older RPGs! Try "Paper Mario" (or its equally awesome sequel) if you want to play the best RPG ever.

Other pretty good RPGs include "Golden Sun", "Quest 64", "Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga", and of course "Pokémon HeartGold" (which is the best game in the series yet-- mostly because it's pretty much a port of Gold version with enhanced graphics and new features that are actually decent).

Edit: Oh yeah, Final Fantasy IV is awesome as well! I recommend the GBA version.

Fire Emblem series (GBA, gamecube, wii, and DS)
Golden Sun Series (GBA and DS)
Tales of Symphonia (PS2)
Deus Ex (pc)
Final Fantasy VI (GBA)
.Hack// (PS2. warning: confusing)

And that's all I got. I can vouch for every one of them except Deus Ex, because i've only seen a friend play it.
Tales of Symphonia is really good, I also recommend it. I have the Gamecube version. You should also try Tales of Vesperia if you want something newer. Its for the Xbox360.

Neverwinter Nights was easily the weakest rpg Bioware have ever released. The only *only* reason to buy it is for the community mods as the singleplayer is abyssal, the characters bland, and gameplay mechanics merely acceptable; more designed for multiplayer than any grand singleplayer adventures. Though thankfully the mod community has learned to work around that little problem!

Neverwinter Nights 2: Mask of the Betrayer however stands on its own as an excellent roleplaying experience and a damned solid story. No mods required! The story is suitably imaginative and intriguing, the characters well written and portrayed, the soundtrack nicely brooding. Then when you add that NWN2 also boasts a huge selection of mods, well, it's a damned good product!

So no, I don't know how 'Obsidian can cock up a good game', I rather like the studio myself.

As for the topic, I'd suggest Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines if you're old enough and in the mood for a brilliant rpg. True it's a PC rpg and you said you'd prefer console ones, but this game is relatively easy to find and since it uses the Half-Life 2 engine runs well on even older computers. Look it up!

Id prefer Console to PC
Lost Odyssey (traditional turn based RPG, with a decent storyline. )

Resonance of Fate (Different. That's all I can say. It's also long)

Persona 3 or 4 (Dating Sim+ Demons= Insanely odd amounts of fun)

The Fallout Series

Demon Souls (Not for the Faint of Heart)

If you decide to try the PC out I would suggest Fallout 1 and 2 or Baulders Gate ( If you liked Dragon Age, then you'll like Baulder's gate. Plus it is pretty old. Also Torchlight is pretty good. I would suggest Morrowind or Oblivion for PC but obviously they are out there for the console if you so desire. It's

If you have a gameboy or DS, you can also find some pretty good RPGs on there.
