With the recent earthquakes and tsunamis in Japan, a lunar satellite approaching Earth is putting fear down the spines of the internet. Personally, I think it's Majora's Mask [http://www.zeldawiki.org/The_Legend_of_Zelda:_Majora's_Mask] all over again.

What does the Escapist make of this impending doom?

Super moon is beautiful.
Cthulu is is the impeding doom, not the moon.

It's an overblown rumor fueled by a man who claims to be a professional astrologer... I think we'll be fine.

Why would the moon being closer to the earth affect anything but the tides in a major way?

Well, that could be annoying.

The moon already keeps me awake at night what with it reflecting light into my face (I cannot be bothered to put my curtains back up after getting a new wall) and tomorrow it will be bigger and brighter?

Yep, nothing to worry about until an astronomer says so.

well, theoretically it can affect the tectonic plates. but still... it's not like this has never happened before.

I love how their main point for this being a natural disaster is that it's happening very close to the Japanese earthquake, apparently coincidence is a harbinger of the apocalypse.
I can't see how this will change anything majorly aside from maybe some tidal shifts, this didn't cause the earthquake, the earthquake didn't cause this so I'm thinking we're fine.

Or did it? I think he's just an attention whore.
True, maybe the earthquake caused the earth to go more towards the moon or something, I dunno about that stuff really.

A Supermoon?! LOL! Basically it's just the Moon, but slightly closer (less than 7% closer then average). I mean it won't really be noticeably bigger in the sky. As for tides there will be a measurable, but trivial difference. As for the Earth? No measurable effect.
