Hey guys. Long time lurker, first time poster. I wanted to fit in and post this bizzare video of people SWIMMING in oily water down in Florida. I find it really weird to see people trying to swim in this stuff! Doesn't the oil, like, intensify burning and stuff??

What are your guy's thoughts on it? (Hopefully I posted this in the right place)

You know, my family already has a non-refundable deposit to rent a house to go scalloping (if you notice that I'm not on here for a while, thanks for noticing...anyways, that will be why). I expect a week or two of bleh...Oh, we won't go out if there's oil everywhere...which I expect...tried explaining that there will be oil out there and it will contaminate the scallops. They wouldn't listen...also, thanks for ruining my vacation BP!!!

OT: I hope that won't hit Cocoa Beach...though I fear it will. That's the beach I go to. (I realize it's on the east side but I heard on a news report that it could travel over her because of the sea current. No, I didn't fail Geography. :p )

XOT: What's wrong with those people?! Why would you let your kids to walk through that stuff? And then be surprised that they get it on them?! IT'S EVERYWHERE!!! Seriously...I'm having trouble finding info on the effects of oil on skin so if anybody can find some info, please quote me.

That's just insane really.

Why would they want to volunteer themselves to receive nasty crap on their bodies and then smell of flammability for the rest of days. Might as well be saying they're on board with BP.

That's bizarre.

I can't understand why you'd do that willingly. I swam in oily water once, in Spain, some had leaked onto the beach. I didn't mean to, but I did, and it was fucking horrible. It sticks to you, for ages and ages, and it's really uncomfortable, and painful too.
My flip-flops still have black stains from the oil I stepped in on the coast of Majorca (or somewhere around Spain - I don't much like Spain now), and that was many years ago (yes, I like my flip flops, and I will not change them).

I don't know what all this fuss is about. I have to pay £1 a litre at a BP petrol station and the south coast of America get billions of gallons for free delivered to their doors. You just can't please some people.

If it's the Cocoa Beach I'm thinking of, it's on the wrong side of the state. The oil spill is on the West coast of the state, in the Gulf of Mexico. Cocoa Beach is on the East coast -- the Atlantic side. If the oil actually makes it that far -- and it would take some kind of anti-miracle for that to happen -- it's probably going to wind up getting all the way to England as well.

Edit: You probably already know that. I figured you were from another country, turns out you're a Floridian too...

OT: It kills me just to think about this let alone to watch the video the OP posted, but a partial explanation for why people are actually swimming in it might be the relentless advertising campaigns about how the beaches are actually safe, and they aren't going to be closed.

We're supposed to be scalloping along the panhandle, in the Gulf of Mexico. Also, you are correct about Cocoa Beach being on the East side. I mentioned that because I recently saw a news report that mentioned that it is possible for the oil to show up on the East side due to the sea current. Also, I've heard it is possible for traces of the BP oil spill to eventually show up on European shores because of those same currents. Just thought I'd explain so that you didn't think I failed Geography. :) Looking back at my post, I realize I should have explained that better.

I have a bad feeling it's going to affect fishing for everyone, including much more northern states... BP, get your shit together please.

OT: Swimming in oil seems like a really bad idea, I mean it could give you cancer or something.

Well its safe to say that the people that allow their kids to swim in it are stupid. The fact that they are on the beach with crude oil washed ashore is a testament to their stupidity.

I work on cars, and I do oil changes, and with sun beating down on that stuff, its gotta be pretty hot. Not only that, but with that amount, and the possibility of it actually getting into your body, the health hazards are too long to list.

Okay, that makes a lot more sense. And you're right about it being possible for it to make it as far as Europe -- the British Isles are on the same line of latitude as Alaska. The only thing keeping the area reasonably warm is a current that runs through the Gulf of Mexico, going right around Florida, by England and right up the European coast. On a side note, I spent the day on the Gulf myself yesterday, but it was far enough south that the oil spill is not yet an issue.
