"We felt that the amount of passion and resources that we are putting into this game elevated it beyond the expectations that someone would have for a remaster," he said. "This is a full-fledged reboot of a classic game into something new."
Guess what is system shock 3 then. theres 2 system shock games coming out in future. if so then this generation will mark as return of system shock and goodbye to bioshock. The real Legend is back!!. more gameplay demo will be shown next week.

I don't think that because System Shock exists that all of a sudden Bioshock no longer does...

As to the game itself, I've never played it but I would give it a go as there are some who seem to believe that System Shock is the greatest game to have ever been created and I'm curious to see it for myself. Although it doesn't state one way or the other, I'm going to go ahead and assume that that day still won't arrive as it doesn't look like it would be brought to console. All well, I guess I'll just keep replaying the greatest FPS games ever created (Wolfenstein New Order and Bioshock Infinite my friends).

System shock 2 is one of the greatest game of all time and inspired many games and plenty of games try to copy system shock 2. it was truely immersive experience and level design was just amazing. dead space, mass effect, bioshock exist because of system shock.

It is, as far as I can tell, still a remaster, only far more comprehensive then usual (A bit more then an up-res and a new engine).

In any case, I find this funny as hell. Not only are you slobbering over two games solely because of a prestigious name, but you're slobbering over two games solely because of the name that are being developed by two different companies, with minimal personal from the original games. And you're slobbering over the weaker of the two System Shocks.

Hilarious.

I'm wondering how this will affect System Shock 3. If they plan on rebooting the series, will we effectively have two parallel timelines to the series? Or is this just indicating massive changes to the System Shock story?

Either way, I guess we'll understand more in a few days. Hopefully things turn out OK.

While I get BioShock, I'm not so sure about Dead Space and Mass Effect. Dead Space, from what little I played, was basically Resident Evil 4 in space. And Mass Effect was basically BioWare applying their experience with Star Wars to their own IP and with more action-oriented combat.

Also, I'm not dismissing System Shock 2's influence. I just don't think it's existence is the reason we have Mass Effect and Dead Space.

"Dead Space" definitely owes more to "Resident Evil 4" (not to mention the films "Event Horizon"/"Alien"), but it vaguely has that Shockian level design where it's a collection of zones, and each zone is basically a central area that leads out to a bunch of small rooms you have to collect stuff from or press a button in. It feels like "BioShock" with "Resident Evil 4"'s controls.

I haven't played systemshock2 in awhile. I recall not being all that impressed. I liked how open the ship was, but the gameplay was kind of lacking. (It came off grindy and unfair.)

I thought this was a remaster, not a reboot? There's a difference.

Also, never played System Shock, but I'm very skeptical about it influencing Dead Space or Mass Effect. As others have pointed out, Dead Space appears to take its frame of reference from Alien (abandoned ship, vulnerability, hunted by a monstrous creature/creatures) and Space Oddyssey (markers=monoliths), with general reference to sci-fi in general (e.g. Isaac Clarke is named after both Isaac Asimov and Arthur C. Clarke). Mass Effect seems to be a combination of influence from Star Trek (multi-species crew on a ship), Babylon 5 (alien diplomacy), Battlestar Galactica (quarians fleeing geth), and BioWare's Star Wars games (squad system, space setting), with a healthy dose of originality and other sci-fi tropes (e.g. the Reapers - C'thulu in space and whatnot).

It's all just garbage speak at this point.

From what I can tell, it's being rebranded as a 'reboot' because they're basically building the game from the ground up (It's too ancient to just redraw and rerelease), and they don't have a word for that kind of work anymore (Remastered usually being applied to half ass efforts and relatively minor graphical improvements).

Regardless, unless they've changed something in the last week or so, it'll still be the same game. It'll just look glorious and have an interface that doesn't feel like it was put together by a drunk trying to prove how sober he is.

System Shock came onto the gaming scene first, so it get's all the credit for every 3d sci-fi game with even an ounce of RPG mechanics, for all time. But yes, Dead Space and Mass Effect owe absolutely nothing to System Shock. Dead Space is basically the culmination of years of 3rd person genre build up, adding it's own neatness (The HUDless HUD), and Mass Effect is basically a new space opera, given to a world that hasn't seen a new space opera in years, as everyone just felated the ones we made decades ago.

Really, I just hope they don't try to put the weapon degradation mechanic back in. That was one of the most annoying issues I had with the original game. I do remember that there was a patch or a mod to basically turn it off, which made the game much more playable.

Also, if they make the Rickenbacker much less of a linear slog, that would be nice too.

That's right, folks, the inspiration for the changes being made to System Shock came from Bioshock and Dead Space. Works for me, but for people hoping for a time machine... Ha! The well has been poisoned and you can't go back!

Mass effect takes it's Qs from star control.
Which in turn was inspired by Starflight, although that game was in itself also a key inspiration for Mass Effect, as former series director/producer Casey Hudson confirmed [https://twitter.com/CaseyDHudson/status/67417995101736961] some time ago.

That's System Shock 2 you're thinking of. This is a remake of the first game which takes place on a space station.

Wierd, I was thinking this whole time that this is a SS2 remake.

So now I'm more interested, being that SS feels a bit clunky in the combat department nowadays.

So THAT explains why this appeals to me so much.

Good news!

In all honesty, I think both of them (although SS1 especially) are rather clunky in several ways, like the combat, but also controls and UI/Inventory.

I know not everyone likes the direction the fps and fps hybrid forms have taken in the past decade or so, but there have been improvements, and more intuitive controls/UI is one of them.

You are wrong about that. Or at least about SS2 and its influence on Dead Space.
I played through SS2 just a few days ago, and its story was so similar to Dead Space 1 and 2 Lore that there is no doubt for me. In parts it is literally the same.
