I've never really understood why anime has such a following. I mean most anime has more cliques then a primary school panto (elementary school if your country is stupid). It seems like people who like anime seem to mindlessly defend it even when some elements of it can be pretty fucked up. I actually like the art style that anime is done in and I can appreciated some very high quality animation and talent behind it. My problems may stem from the difference in culture between me and the Japan. That's just my way of saying I think the Japanese are fucking weird...
Let me give you the plot to Ponyo: a curious and intelligent young boy finds a fish down at the ocean and names it Ponyo. The fish has a face and turns out to be some sort of princess of the ocean or some shit. This may sound like I've not paid very much attention but its really because its not that clear. I actually kind like that. The fish's farther who is for some reason a human, is trying to track her down, but Ponyo falls in love with the boy and he loves her. Despite the fact she is a fucking fish! She becomes human, and magic (for some reason) raises the sea level to a massive height but its cool because everyone is totally relaxed with their homes being destroyed. That's about as far as I can go before I spoil anything. Don't get me wrong, Its not a bad movie, but it is a kids film and as such doesn't have anywhere near the kind of depth something like spirited away. In it being a kids film that ruins the one appealing aspect of anime, the depth. That's something I liked about Spirited Away was that you felt like the story only scratched on the lore and the world. While Spirited Away was cliche, predictable and unbearably upbeat the world its self was interesting.
Something I did not like about Ponyo was that the world was much shallower (thats a funny joke if you watch the movie). I did actually like the characters more in Ponyo. Well I liked the boy. Also appreciated the fact he didn't sound like a woman for once. Out of curiosity I looked up the voice actor and fucking hell it was Matt Damon. I was really surprised. I thought he did a very good job conveying an adventurous but emotionally fragile character was no that's not very funny but shut up.
I can understand why people like anime but I feel like they just really aren't for me. I think the problem is I feel like the general plot was written by a 5 year old. Just read the following in a children's voice. "There should be a boy and he finds a fish and the fish is a princess and her dad is a magician and then the world floods because she becomes human." It actually fits surprisingly well. So in summary Ponyo was good, kinda weird but worth a watch.
