Howdy Escapist peoples!
This topic may exist out there already, but I'm just looking for some suggestions, as well as opening up a general discussion on the subject. I haven't seen anything lately, so here goes!

Occasionally my boyfriend and I travel to my brothers on weekends to hang out. The four of us (Brother and his fiance) are all quite nerdy and love a good geeky board game to play when we hang out. We used to play D&D but as schedules don't allow for regular visits, we've put it on the back burner for the time being.
Mostly we have Munchkin with some expansions (of course), Guillotine (excellent, fun, short), Zombies! (were kinda disappointed with that one...fun, but pretty low-key and slow), Apples to Apples and Quelf (really weird but occasionally hilarious...great drinking game), the last two of which aren't really all that particularly geeky but we do play them occasionally.

So, any suggestions? What do you play regularly? With how many and how much was it? Are you more of a casual player, or do you really like long, in-depth games?

I'll put it out there that Guillotine was a great surprise for us...we picked it up randomly at PAX East when we wanted something to do while sitting for a bit. At $15 it was an easy price to swallow, and turned out really fun and easy to play. It's great for just a couple people or more, and can be played easily just about anywhere. Each game only lasts maybe 15-20 minutes or so, but you can easily play round after round without getting too tired of it. I highly recommend it for a quick, casual game. :D

Ahhh! You didn't like Zombies!? It's amazing! Was actually going to suggest it until I read that you'd tried it.

Risk is good but can be long! And it's not exactly nerdy.

Amen to that. Zombies can be lots of fun but its predecessor (can't remember what it's called now but it's about a castle of Skeletons rather than a street of zombies) is superior. Also, the new edition of Risk has been dumbed down and all the changes they've made are for the worse. Especially replacing soldiers with *shivers* arrows. I have no idea what they were thinking there.

We liked it okay, we were just hoping it'd be much better. We've only played it a couple times though, so I think we need to give it some more love...possibly with added booze and a couple rule changes (never being able to use the items in your hands gets frustrating...you wind up so rarely using the cards you pick up). We tend to be too polite too. XD We're more used to playing cooperatively in L4D. But I'm glad you (and a couple others) have vouched for it, as perhaps we'll find it better when going back to it. Thanks!

And WOW Risk! LOL My brother and I used to play around with that when we were much younger...I agree it might be too long for us. Typically we like something that can be done in at least an hour, as our visits are restricted to one day here lately (hence the dropping of D&D for now).

I've a bunch of friends at uni I play boards with regularly, and get drunk. We usually play Risk and Settlers of Catan. I like Risk, but it takes fucking ages to finish. Settlers is good for 4 people, though a little fiddly.

And I do like Zombies! But it takes an unbelievable amount of time to finish. Probably because we all screw each other over.
I've heard of Settlers before, but I'm unable to grasp what's so good about it from the box?

Our first game of Zombies took a -very- long time, I think because we had 6 players(one of which was my Mom, god that was hilarious). We played a second time with 4 and it wasn't as bad.

Well, uhm. Warhammer, which are tabletop games, is my favorite game and I play it all the time, spend every day modeling and painting models. But it takes a lot more commitment than the average game, so I wouldn't recommend it if your only using it now and then. It's also quite expensive to build an entire army, not to mention time consuming! Great game if you have the time, money and will!

If cost isn't an issue, Warhammer 40k.
Excelent fun, you get to paint your own stuff...

Games can last all day or a couple hours, me and my friends usually play every Saturday, and our games start around 6 and end at 10 or 11.

I play Warhammer 40K and it's very fun. Though to be able to have fun you need money, basic skills to paint small small models and other friends that are willing to spend money on this damn fun hobby.

Another thing, there is two versions of Warhammer, the regular one with a fantasy setting (think orcs, humans, elf etc) and the 40K one (Same races more or less and its in the future, IN SPAAAAAAAAAAAAAACE, with big guns, very big guns.)

There is starter sets if you wanna start with it. :D

My brother and I have gotten into Monopoly quite a bit, recently. The parental units got us a newer version called Monopoly City, so we've been playing that a lot. He's a greedy little ***** of a tycoon, which is probably why I'm 0-2. (I say "a lot" because each game was in excess of four hours in length).

Erm, and I like Cribbage, but that's more of a card game.

HAHAHA that's f'n awesome. I would -love- to get into something like Warhammer...I love painting stuff like that, but haven't the money, sadly. :( Someday, perhaps!

I have to confess something.

I have a boardgame addiction. I've got about 30 different boardgames sitting in one of my closets.

These are what I consider my top 5.
Iron Dragon http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iron_Dragon_(board_game)
Age of Mythology http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Age_of_Mythology:_The_Boardgame
Arkham Horror http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arkham_Horror
A Game of Thrones (based on George R R Martin's books) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Game_of_Thrones_(board_game)
Pandemic http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pandemic_(board_game)

I've had Arkham Horror games last upward of five hours, so that's probably not a great one if you're looking for quicker ones.

I like other Fantasy Flight Games releases, though. My friend has Talisman and Tannhäuser, Talisman being more swords-and-sorcery fantasy and Tannhäuser being more involving magic-wielding cyborg Nazis.

Pandemic sounds really cool, might look into that one next. :) I like that it's everyone racing against the game together, seems kinda different.

I actually think I would be still playing Warhammer right now, if I hadn't realised I was pissing money away.

Me and my friend are comtemplating playing D&D, however.

I actually don't understand why Monopoly has a reputation as a boring game. Well... actually, I do. Clearly. But I always thought it was awesome, how each game is vastly different from the last.

I think people are put off by the idea of it lasting more than a half hour, but it's so exciting while you're playing!
