Hello Escapist community!
Ok, I want to explain the situation which gave me this idea. I was at a family BBQ the other week and one of my nephews asked me how much the original Half-Life would cost to download. I didn't know but I asked him why he was wondering. He told me he wanted to download it so he could play a paintball mod for it...
When I heard him say that I told him, "Ok, you've completely missed the point as to why you should download the original Half-Life". I was beside myself as to why he would only want it to play a mod (not even one of the decent ones), but I had to remind myself that he isn't part of my generation that grew up with this game. So it made me think of all the games I played years back that are essential contributions to my gaming history.
Well, we're at a moment when we as a community of gamers want video games to be recognized as an art. To show our support for this why not take time to replay some of these games which were important to us. It's August now which means there's zero to zilch as far as new games coming out right now. I'm not talking strictly about the games which are universality viewed as great, but rather games from your past which you had a special connection with. Art is supposed to fill us with emotion, so play something you remember having a strong feeling for.
I understand that some gamers are new comers to the world of video games but don't let that stop you from playing a game that came out years ago. Maybe you'll discover a new found respect for what gaming is today by seeing what predated it.
So go ahead and rekindle a lost love you once had for a game. Go and post it here as well so you could share that memory with us.
(Also no judgement either with other people's taste in games. If we want to treat games as art we need to understand the fact that one's view on art is neither right nor wrong. So no disrespect to how someone else feels about a game)
If you need some ideas for games to try, you should consider some of these titles:
Fallout
X-Com
Earthbound
Psyconauts
Starcraft
Half-Life (both one and two)
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
Silent Hill 2
Beyond Good & Evil
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
Star Wars: Jedi Knight
Super Metroid
Final Fantasy VI
System Shock
The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
Lets have an awesome August Escapist!
