I've seen someone dual-boot Windows on a Macbook, mistakenly believing that it was required to run Linux (he did so in a virtual machine display), and he needed Linux in order to run Wine (a Windows compatibility layer).

Essentially, he installed Windows in Linux in Windows on a Mac. The layers of fail simply pile up.

What's the most depressing technological fail you've seen someone pull?

Digital Signatures.

Excellent idea for extremely important documents that might be in danger of forgery or alterations. A train wreck for minor documents that have to go through multiple hands, especially when that document hits the email of a person that may not be in their office for days, but could have been easily approached off site with a hard copy.

I recently had this problem. My vacation paperwork for the army (Called terminal leave, as it was basically payed vacation that I would never come back from) took over 45 days to process. The reason? The document got was stuck in a Privates inbox while she was on funeral detail. She didn't come to her office for 2 weeks. It then got bounced to a Colonel who spent 8 out of 10 hours a day in a motor pool, and the other 2 wandering about, with maybe 15 minutes in office. Once it was finished, it was sent back to the private, who, doing what privates do, proceeded to become pants backwards retarded and slowpoke lazy, letting the document rot in her inbox while she fiddled with her iPod.

Compare this to the last time I took vacation. I had a hard copy and got all my signatures in 3 hours.

Also, behold, the most pointless (And annoying) networked device I have ever had the displeasure of working on, the Digital Sender, a $3000 scanner/email client. Because a $100 scanner and $500 dollar computer couldn't do the same fucking thing.

I don't... Why would... But how... No one... *faceplam*

OT: I've not really seen anything bad. A few people I know run Ubuntu and I think it sucks. Nothing major, though.

I'm on Ubuntu right now. To be honest, I'm not a Linux guy. I just have it installed for file recovery (And run it for shits and giggles).

Whats wrong with it?

I just don't like the way it looks or operates.

Nuttin' wrong with Ubuntu, it's just Debian with a bunch of extra stuff to make it friendlier. You can easily change how it looks, of course. What do you mean by not liking how it operates?

Operate is probably the wrong word. I meant to convey my dislike of the way the system is set up. I'm so used to Windows now (having grown up on it) that Ubuntu confused the hell out of me at first. I learned how to use it and can get by on it fine, but I'd rather not.

Probably the user interface, which I must admit, as a windows user, is annoying. Right is left, no start button, file system is similar yet ever so different.

I have a similar problem.

A digital sender. It scans things, then emails them.

Seriously, 3 grand for a scanner/email combo. I wish I was making this shit up.

It's not that bad. Mine decided once, a couple of time ago, that I should pay her for a new anti-virus because her computer got some viruses. Thing is, I got my own. Couldn't comprehend that being on the same internet doesn't mean we share the anti-virus through it.

Ah, fair enough. Interestingly, Ubuntu is one Linux distro that's noted for being more "Windows-like" than most of the rest, so I'm guessing you're just not keen on Linux in general?

It does have a number of obvious differences from Windows (and a lot more not-so-obvious ones). It does, however, have an equivalent of the Start button. It's the menu button with the Ubuntu logo on it. It might also say "Programs" next to it.

I have next to no experience there, really. Aside from a brief stint with Ubuntu, I've used Windows my entire life. I did actually use an Apple laptop in school and found that to be great, but crossing over to any other system now would just be a pain in the ass, lol.

Firstly: your avatar is insanely cute ^^

Second: a girlfriend of mine once called me in hysterical laughter. After I calmed her down she told me why she was laughing (in that cute way she did, lol): her mum asked her to call me and ask for some paper, as she wanted to send an email and had run out... of paper.

When installing Desktop Ponies
(It's a program that makes little sprites of MLP: FiM: characters walk around the screen randomly)
and the program attempted to use Dwarf Fortress Files in it.
Yeah.
The real failure is that it didn't succeed. D=

After several mishaps, my stepmom still insists on using dish soap (not to be confused dishwasher soap) in our dishwasher. Now I am rarely surprised when I walk into a kitchen full of suds.
Not at all computer reltated, but still a fail of technological understanding.

Here's something for you. I have a brother who is technological savvy to the point of high geekdom. He can do ANYTHING for computers, probably, to the point where I'm the only one in the house who can understand him because I'm the only one tech savvy enough to get it.

He does dumb shit sometimes, things that should NEVER happen with him because he's suppose to be smart.

My sister's computer is on. My sister is married, living away from home, and was in ONCE to print some tickets. Her computer is on and I want to shut it down. Everyone else: Go do it. Him: Wait, she might have a remote operating system running. ME: Bullshit, she doesn't have one because she came HERE to print the tickets! Guess who's right.

Another thing is about the wireless router. There is the main router and an extra node in his room, a secondary one, to beam better signals to my sister's computer. I am directly above the first one. ME: Well, since you disconnected my PS3 from the net, I'll have to reconnect it now. Him: They're exactly the same in output. ME: THE MAIN ONE GIVES OUT A STRONGER SIGNAL BY 15%, DUMBASS! YOU PICK THE ONE THAT PERFORMS BETTER, ALWAYS!

This does not include the times he's actually fucked up a computer somehow while trying to fix it. Oh, he's good and all, but that's because he's done the damage TO fix. It's a travesty because he's suppose to be good and yet he is like this when it should never happen.
