With the rise of "Surrogates," if you will. [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/106976-Hacker-Preparing-Kinect-Controlled-Robot-Army]

Obvious applications are doing work which requires you to actually be there -- manufacturing, some forms of office work, repair work, etc. However, since one can use a robotic avatar to do work at a distance, what's stopping one from using one to run errands and do pretty much everything else, and thus never leave the house? Nothing.

I'm a little perturbed about this -- I actually like being with people -- and I might actually warm up to the idea the way I warmed up to e-books. But why isn't it feasible right this minute, and if (when?) it is, what are possible problems? Reproduction and child-rearing are one possible issue, but are there others? Perhaps I'm a little weird for asking this, but it's been on my mind. I know there are no simple solutions, but still -- a little food for thought here.

EDIT: Corrected link to "Surrogates" Wikipedia page.

But if we did have that level of Virtual Reality in gaming, would we have pain receptors in the program? Would being shot feel like being actually shot, or would it be more paintball-painful?

I'm not talking about gaming; I'm talking about real life. Any force feedback need not be painful; just a sharp jolt or bump.

It isn't feasible because it's expensive and we don't yet have robot parts that are as flexible as a human.

Possible problems? Here's an obvious one - we would all be like the lazy asses on Wall-E. We would never get up to do anything. We wouldn't live as long, we wouldn't move as fast, we wouldn't be as strong, we would suffer more health issues than we do now.

That said, the idea is awesome. It's just that people would cease to go outside, which is actually healthy for all you pasty-faced nerds, like it or not. You would, at some point, need to go out.
I didn't think about that. Good point -- an exercise regimen would certainly be necessary.
