Moving away from the large steel door sealing the entrance to vault 101, creeping towards the sunlight flickering through a barely-intact wooden door. The excitement of what I was going to find on the other side.. Light.. A blinding light, followed by the sound of wind.
As I regain my view, the next sight is even more breathtaking, a world without borders.. Where I can see in every direction as far as the curves of the land will let me, it was magical..
For those that didn't play it, fallout 3.
I had another moment a few years prior, when playing Half-Life 2 for the first time.
The first glimpse of the citadel was awe inspiring, this world that stemmed from a combination of our own, and the imagination, was beautiful.
Now to take it back even further, this time not an environment, but a weapon.
The BFG from the early doom games. The power to empty a room of all baddies entirely, even kill a boss, with a single shot. While not as big a deal as the first two mentioned games
it still had a rather large impact on me.
Now they mean nothing, the sprawling wasteland is just a vessel containing points of interest, traveling across it could even be considered an annoyance, as opposed to the adventure it was during that first play through.
The citadel just an objective, an environment we've seen too many times before.
The BFG just a weapon, a means of achieving my goal.
Have you had any moments like these? Things that at first, were truly amazing, but since have become just an ordinary part of games.
