That 'One more go' factor

I always think that the best games all have one factor in common, whether it be racing, FPS, platform, adventure. Whether it be a 20+ million dollar blockbuster or a flash based web game.

Until recently there have been few games with this factor released in the last few years. Apart from maybe being desperate to see exactly what happens to Gordon freeman, or desperatly wanting to see what weirdness Bioshock is about to throw at you.

But do they really have the 'Just one more go' at 3am when you can barely keep your eyes open? No. In my opinion both could wait until another day.

Even the heavily hyped GTA4 doesn't quite seem to have it there. It's a great game but can become frustrating to the point that you can put it down for a few days before coming back to the part where you are stuck and having another go. i was starting to get a little disenchanted with gaming as a whole as it was seeming that glorious content was taking over from general playability and god damn outrageous addictiveness.

Then, last week, i bought two new games. To my enormous surprise they both had this factor - a factor that has been missing from games for what seems like an eternity.

Take last night for instance, i'd had far to much to drink, far too much to smoke, and my vision was a blurred as a badly moulded blamange. but i had to do it, i had to beat the latest team challenge on GRID. And i did it. And felt great. I felt like i haven't felt since my mate Josh and I spent an entire weekend trying to beat the white car on Ridge Racer Revolution on the PSX, and finally cracked it at about 5am on the Monday morning. I think i took the week off work to celebrate!

And that brings me to the second game i played this weekend with the same factor - Metal Gear Solid 4. Possibly the only game in history to actually live up to it's incredible hype. It's a masterpiece with wow factor coming out of it's a-hole. It lives up to it's hype and beyond. Way beyond, but it has that other nagging addictiveness - you just have to have one more go. This time it reminds me of GoldenEye of N64 fame, trying to to severnya bunker in 10.2 seconds to get to 00Agent to unlock paintball on the multiplayer.

With MGS4 it's not quite like that, you desperatly want to see what's going to happen next and there is no correct way to complete a mission other than to get to the checkpoint by either sneaking or just FUCKIT and blow everyone away... unlike my previous experience with MGS which was do it stealthy - or don't do it at all.

It's good to see this factor back in games, and long may it stay!

I must go now, as i just need to have one more go....

Games with lots of small, short missions have this factor. Games that are never-ending and that have autosave points every 3 steps don't. You're never going to say "Just one more try" on a level that took you over an hour to do, and then you wiped at the last second. I know Brawl did this to me. I had already beaten the game and I tried capturing a boss via trophy stand. Beat the whole half hour-long level, got to the boss, fought him for another half an hour, finally got a trophy stand, threw it at him, his captured trophy fell off the edge. Had to start over. That doesn't make you say "Ugh, so close, just one more go!" that makes you say "&*%$ THIS! This game sucks."

I got that feeling when I first played Advance Wars DS, one more mission, I have to... I think it was the gameplay, I couldn't stop, I just enjoyed each battle so much you knew you'd enjoy the next one.

This happens to me with nearly every game. I always grind through something if I know there's a light on the other side. Or just a bigger challenge.

That was an interesting perspective on what makes a game worth wild. You made me raise an eyebrow in thought, not many have done that lately. Well done, Sir.

Though I tend to disagree...a little. After so long every game is going to get to the point where the 'one more go' isn't gonna seem as satisfying as in past times. Also I'm like this with any new game I play. I play it and play it until I can play it blind, deaf and in my sleep. Also I think good experiences count more than you think. Especially if your playing with friends or just people on-line. The better experience I have with a game with other people the more I'm gonna want to give it one more go. If I'm awesome one night, unstoppable and not showing signs of slowing down I'm gonna want one more go. If it's just not my night, I'm most likely gonna go to bed rather than sit up and be owned. That's just me though.

Once again, very interesting perspective....

Persona 3's day-by-day system does this to me all the time. I keep thinking "one more day, one more day, one more day, I'm sure something interesting is gonna happen tomorrow..."

You think the blending in made the stealth too easy and pointless? Play through the hardest difficulty and say that. Dumbass.

There's playable parts in MGS4?!

Another one more to go factor are achievements in any game (except Avatar)

Ninja Gaiden 2 man....

Not my favorite game, but it had that factor. But I don't think it's because it was a good game, I think it's because it had it's moments where it was TRYING to piss you off with it's B.S. So I'm sitting there like "Game Over? Get that shit off my screen, I'm kicking your cheap asses this time!"

So yeah... one more go on that one. I got the achievement for 100 continues. Not my proudest moment, but whatever.

On a side note, those "playing bad" achievements are always unexpected. I got the one for suicides on F.E.A.R too. I suck at throwing grenades in that game...

Hey, at least we're getting a great story mixed in with some comedy instead of these stupid shallow comedy movies and remakes of comic book heroes we're seeing nowadays.
