I was recently reflecting upon the Extra Punctuation of the Conduit, and i was thinking what definitive a list of the 10 worst things a game could do would be made up of. But on thinking further, i also began to wonder what the 10 most Taboo things a gamer could do When playing a game? I would like to see what a list of things that should NEVER, EVER be broken would look like.

What would be your suggestions for A. "The 10 commandments of game design" and B. "The 10 player commandments"

I was thinking along the lines of "Thou shalt keep a reasonable ratio of cutscence to gameplay" and "Thou shalt put player experience above all else" for Game design, and "Thou shalt not Achievement whore" and "thou shalt not use Strategy guide" for the player.

Let's see if we can craft two definitive lists.

And the Lord spake, saying, "First shalt thou take out the Holy Pin. Then shalt thou count to three, no more, no less. Three shall be the number thou shalt count, and the number of the counting shall be three. Four shalt thou not count, neither count thou two, excepting that thou then proceed to three. Five is right out. Once the number three, being the third number, be reached, then lobbest thou thy Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch towards thy foe, who, being naughty in my sight, shall snuff it...

(This isn't really relevant to anything but I felt like posting it.)

Game Design:
1) Thou shalt not rip off other games to the point of 100% unoriginality
2) Thou shalt not implement unreasonable dick moves to purposely make the game harder and frustrate the player
3) Thou shalt not make a sequel that has no real purpose other than to keep giving players more copies of game for another full price (GH pricks)
4) Thou shalt not make DLC unreasonably expensive (again GH and Rock Band pricks)
5) Thou shalt not implement achievements/trophies that spoil a game's plot/ending by popping up before the credits (fucking Resistance 2 reminded me of this)

Player Gaming:
1) Thou shalt not be biased towards the game and purposely try to hate it because of popular view (i.e. what most people do with halo 3)
2) Thou shalt not judge a game bad because of a few nitpicks
3) Thou shalt not cheat with game glitches and hack a game online\
4) Thou shalt not find solutions online to keep progressing through a game until all possible solutions and resources have been tried and failed

Thou shalt make trailers have actual gameplay footage.

Thou shalt not be a sequel with a number greater than ((previous games metascore)/20)-1

Thou shalt not rely solely on multiplayer if thou hast a singleplayer portion.

Agreed, christ. Possible pardons to games where guns degrade at a MUCH slower rate than you find replacements (STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl, for example)

Thou shalt not have enemy-spawning pods

Thou shalt not program friendly AI such that NPCs constantly jump in the way of your bullets.

Thou shalt not include characters intended to be goofy losers or otherwise outright annoying.

Developers shalt not:

-Show things in advertisements that do not happen in the game (Halo and Gears of War specifically).
-Create DLC before the game is released then release it months later while charging people for it.
-Miss out multiplayer maps from previous instalments in their sequels.
-Spend more time on multiplayer than single player.
-Dumb down sequels.

Players shalt not:

-Quit because they are losing.
-Cheat or use a glitch in a multiplayer game.
-Teabag an enemy they outnumber (or at all ideally).
-Use a microphone unless they can be respectful (this includes not playing music or screaming).
-Play a ranked game unless they have practised by themselves so they know how to actually play.
