I'm sorry. Really. I know there's already a few threads, one even related to what I'm about to ask but that one is 666 posts in and I'd like fresh responses on this. Anyway, I just read this article on Cracked and I have to say I found it pretty damn interesting.

But as interesting as I found it and even though I kind of agree with what Cody says....I'm Irish. I can't properly relate to the arguments and counter-arguments brought up about this issue so I figured I'd ask and see what people-particularly pro-gun people-think about the points raised in that article.

I think the POTUS' stance is pretty reasonable (and I didn't even vote for him! OH GOD I MUST SUCK AT POLITICS!! D. Respect the second amendment right to own guns, but outlaw ones that serve no practical purpose except for use in violent crime. Sure, it may not be "cool" to saw assault rifles are illegal, but seriously, WHO THE FUCK NEEDS AN ASSAULT RIFLE?! They aren't even legal hunting weapons! There is NO REASON to ever own one unless you plan on using it in a CRIME. Ted Nugent will ***** and moan, but let him! Those guys are in a serious minority.

If I see this absurd fallacy one more time my head will burst, what do people expect? Do they believe the smugglers try and swim over with their goods? For a start the UK receives over two billion tons of cargo via ISO containers each year, to search even a few percent of those containers is impossible. Then you have the ships themselves which are so massive it could take weeks to carry out a thorough search.

Then you have the thousands of small private boats and aircraft in UK territory at any moment in time.

Finally you have all of the ferries and passenger aircraft. UK borders are as porous as a countries with a land border, unless that border is completely un-monitored.

No, I did say they can be thought provoking, but the articles are just that, opinionated. I'm suggesting one should not take everything they see on the internet as absolute fact.

No, I did say they can be thought provoking, but the articles are just that, opinionated. I'm suggesting one should not take everything they see on the internet as absolute fact.

To be fair, pretty much every argument everywhere in regards to gun control are opinions. It's not like, say, gravity. Nobody can be 'correct'. They can just be in the majority opinion, or challenge it with an opinion that sounds reasonable and makes people stop and think.

I look for value in all sources. Cracked has not been shown, to me, to intentionally misrepresent what little facts they use, to misquote sources, or to otherwise intentionally deceive, which is more than can be said by some more 'reputable' sources we have available to us.

I have my own opinions on gun control, however my thoughts aren't all that strong. I don't believe many of our people should have rights to firearms due to how the people I know at least in my town react and act WITHOUT weapons. But that's my own experience and I should not judge that as the majority. I feel that I have no need where I reside in having a weapon on me, nor that many people would need one. I have never been in a situation where I would have needed something as extreme as a gun in order to protect myself.

Once again that is me however, and in my hometown (even living in both New York City and Albany) as a 23 year old caucasion female I have yet to experience a time when a gun was needed. Hopefully I won't ever have to.

My only problem with this article is that it starts off with what is, in my opinion, an inherent misconception. Namely, that killing, and violence, is itself a problem.

Who the hell actually thinks that? Is it terrible when some nut job shoots up a movie theatre? Yes. Does that mean that killing is always wrong? No.

Guns are indeed for killing, duh. But that's not necessarily a problem on its own.

Should have titled the article "The Four Biggest Strawmen About Guns That I Could Find"

Care to point explain exactly how any of what he says is a "strawman" or are you just gonna do the usual thing of going "strawman" and leaving it at that?
