Ok Ok, so my previous topic made little to no sense, I have my slapped wrist and the people who want to know me do, the ones who never did don't, now for an era of peace on the boat of Captain Simpson.

So, lets discuss something I was discussing with my friends in work today.

Why is it when a certain band becomes popular, an entire wave of people seem to suddenly jump ship?

Is it just me who notices this trend?

Personally I say love what you love and hate what you hate, just wondering what you lot thought?

And I apologise in advance, for a first crack at a discussion topic, its pretty mundane, I promise I'l think of better ones!

I can't stand those people that say that something's shit because more people like it. Or the ones that thinks its cool not to like something just because other people do.

Jason Mraz, Justin Bieber, Owl City... they are all classic cases of bandwagonism. I can't wait until this happens to one of my favorite bands), so that I can rip into people for jumping on the popularity boat.

No, I recently noticed it as well. My little brother is one of those examples of popularity leeches, and I pity him for it.

I think that in some cases bands change when they become more popular and start creating different types of music. That might push older fans away.

Couldn't agree more, the same people who stop liking a band due to popularity are usually the ones kidding themselves that when their ex faveourite band started out it was "all about the music". Its never all about the music, its a job, likes yours a mine, its 9 - 5 in tight jeans, converse and floppy hair!

If you jump on the bandwagon because you genuinely like whatever the hype is about - perfectly fine. Other than that I see little reason for it... wouldn't it basically mean that you have no personality of your own and require the personalities of others to define yourself? It's somewhat of a sad thought...

Its just that simple, people think its cool to like whats not popular, I have a friend that has a huge habit of this.

Because most people are about as deep as a mud puddle, but without them the world would by an interesting place indeed.

Well said, punks always made me laugh. Its like, we don't follwo the mainstream, we don't follow rules, but by the way can you start wearing safety pinks in your nose and leather jackets, or, we may have to stop hanging around with you...

I never got told that, I was always told by my "friends" that I should cut my hair cause I looked like a mosher, I didn't , and I won that battle....unfortunatly, growing u and getting a job won the war...

I miss you long hair...more than you'l ever know...

Good question, I used to wonder this myself.
I think the reason is that once it goes main stream, alot of people suddenly like it just because "It's in", so you have all these annoying fans who don't know any of the band's early work or who they used to open for, they just know like 3-6 songs, which they claim "OMFG THIS IS THE BEST SONG EVR LOLOLOLROFL!!!!!1!!11!!!" so then all the original fans who liked it when it was under ground suddenly abandon the band because they don't wish to associate with these annoying new commers. After 8-10 months the band falls back out of popularity, and their only fans left are the realy hard core fans, the people who missed the hype, and the people who became true fans after it went mainstream.

Or atleast, thats how I have always seen it.

this is another good point, because once a band goes mainstream they want to try and please their new audience so the older fans lose alot of what they used to have.

i only hate when people act like they know everything about a band because they heard one song on the radio or in guitar hero
