This reviewer gave The Avengers a 3/5 (which is apparently bad according to Rotten Tomatoes' system...?), compares the work of Joss Whedon on The Avengers to Michael Bay, and calls Nick Fury Nick Frost. So yeah.... the fans over at Rotten Tomatoes aren't happy. I can't say I disagree though, it is a poorly written review. But, at the end of the day, if she doesn't like it its her opinion, right? What do you guys think of the review? Anyone seen the advanced screenings and agree? Or disagree? I also think its weird how Rotten Tomatoes counts 3/5 as rotten but whatever, that's a different matter, a 3/5 is positive in my opinion anyway.

95%? Good grief.

That seems a little high, doesn't it? I'd expect a few more rotten reviews before it's all said and done.

If she didn't like it then fair enough, and I can't form an opinion yet cause I havent seen it, but one thing that annoyed me was how she said 'the movie doesn't have enough character development!' Uhh, so? It's not supposed to, that's what the other movies were for. They were made so you could actually learn about the characters so when The Avengers movie comes around, there's no need for backstories and you can get straight to the action. The Avengers is just a sequel to those movies anyway.

This is actually how I feel about reviews in general. If you ask me the only good reviews are ones that are mostly supposed to be taken for entertainment value (i.e. Zero Punctuation). In the end just because someone else says it's crap doesn't mean that YOU'LL think it's crap. Reviews are, after all, nothing but opinions. People shouldn't let others color their perception of movies/games/books etc. They should experience those things for themselves and make their own decision about whether or not they liked it.

Case in point: Dark Souls is considered to insanely hard but otherwise a fantastic game by most people. I, however, thought it was absolutely retarded. My opinion won't change other people's opinions on the matter, nor will their opinions change mine.

Honestly, this is probably good. It means it won't sit on the oh-so-important 100% for any longer and it means people's expectations won't be in the "best movie ever" category.

Why is it news that one film got a negative (hell, not even that, more neutral-positive) review?
Slow news days? Seriously, I had nothing better to do, and I can't wait for The Avengers (or Avengers Assemble as it is called here) to come out.

Yeah, I'm going with everyone who says this...isn't a bad review. This is actually a good review, although not a glowing review. That's okay by me. I can pretty much guarantee that I'm going to enjoy the movie, being a big Whedon fan. He does good shit. And nothing this reviewer said offended me in any way.

The reviews that have been offending me lately have been from these snide assholes that feel that tearing a movie a new one isn't enough, now they have to tear the fan base of a movie a new one (one review of Scott Pilgrim comes to mind where the critic said in so many words that the audienced laughed at every joke like they were trained to do it because they were a bunch of video game loving hipster losers. Wait, what? People laughing at the movie is a bad thing? Wha?). What the hell is with that? Has anyone else noticed this?

You call that a negative review?

It basically states that the movie is too big for its own good, but that there's still enjoyment to be found. She also says that it has the best representation of the Hulk out of all the 3 movies he's been in. If that's not fucking positive, I don't know what is.

I didn't call it a negative review, Rotten Tomatoes did.

How is 3/5 a negative?

That's over half.
Well if I got 60% on a test that would be considered an F.
Seriously? An F? I went to a grammar school and we considered 60% to be a C (basically, a minimal pass), 70% B (average), and 80% an A with 90% a special A-star (or A*). And this was a school where they expected the very best from everyone.

Anyway, on-topic. I can't comment because the movie isn't out yet in the UK and I've not yet seen the advance screenings or anything, but everything I've seen points to an awesome film. But, as has been pointed out in the thread already, nothing is perfect. One bad review, that isn't even that bad, is hardly a harbinger of doom, especially when the reviewer clearly doesn't know anything about the film and has failed to do the research provided by simply paying attention in the film and watching the others in the series first (as is traditionally the way of things - you wouldn't watch Harry Potter 8 without seeing the seventh film first, right?). I mean, Nick Frost? "Lack of character development"? Yeah, clearly a reviewer to take very seriously indeed... :p

Maybe a D actually with F being right below that. I usually just think anything below 70% is anathema as 70% is a C. At least per the standard system. Can change due to grading curves or in certain classes.
Meh, fair enough. That being said, you're in the USA and I'm in the UK anyway. I was lucky to get into a good school and do well in my studies, since the education system over here is just a pile of absolute crap anyway... :p
